Famed surfing documentary filmmaker Bruce Brown made short films, commercials, and worked in television before hitting it big with The Endless Summer. This video features three of these early works. The Wet Set is a film produced for Hobie-MacGregor Sportswear, which features surfers modeling swimwear (on the waves). America's Newest Sport is a short film about skateboarding. Filmmaker Bruce Brown won international acclaim in 1966 with his film The Endless Summer, a fascinating and superbly-photographed documentary about three top-rank surfers following the summer (and the waves) around the globe. But The Endless Summer was hardly Brown's first film, and this re-release of his 1961 effort Surfing Hollow Days shows that Brown was already creating a priceless insider's look at both the culture of surfing and the men and women who rode the waves. Shot in California and Florida, Surfing Hollow Days shows such legends as Robert August, Mike Haley, and Kemp Aaberg in action, as well as Phil Edwards taming the infamous "Pipeline" and Peter Johnson taking on the surf at Sunset Beach at the tender age of 12. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
