In this look at one moment at the end of World War II in Poland, director Tadeusz Kijanski has set the time as September, 1944. The place is the right bank of the Vistula River just at the point where the German army is withdrawing from the city. The brutality of the Germans as they destroy the city and rape women is presented in all its horror. Then the Resistance fighters come along and a disabled war veteran tries to find a way to help their cause. Finally, Polish officers arrive on the scene, ready to welcome the Russians when they cross the Vistula. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This symbol-laden political drama follows the travails of Janek (Wojchiech Malajkat), an actor in a theatrical troupe, who has been given a mysterious briefcase to look after. As a result of his taking receipt of the briefcase (the contents of which are never divulged), he goes to prison not once, but two times. He is strongly encouraged (that is to say tortured) to name his fellow conspirators. The actor's family history is deeply marked by the history of repressions in Poland between the end of World War Two and 1981, when the story takes place. The Janek himself does not know what is going on, only that he is being used by the state system as a pawn in a game of betrayal and counter-betrayal. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In this complex muddle of a spy story, Salomon (Miescyslaw Voit) is a Russian agent who was sent to West Berlin to complete an assassination and steal a notebook -- but ends up looking for his former lover and her son in Brussels while secret agents from all colors of the political spectrum are out to kill him. The son himself has his own marital problems to contend with, and soon he also becomes a focus of attention. Salomon's job is to somehow stay alive, though after many twists and turns in the plot, suspended disbelief has probably come crashing down for most viewers. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

More documentary in its approach than dramatized history, this is a compelling story about a 1901 children's strike in Wrzesnia near the Polish border with Prussia. Poland was partitioned at this time, and a rigidly patriotic Prussian teacher in Wrzesnia follows the dictates of the Germans in parliament and insists that the children be taught their religion classes in German. When the children refuse to take part in the classes, they are supported by the local priest, but that does not save them from being beaten. They are also kept after school and tormented in other ways as well. Newspapers, parents, and the nation as a whole get involved, transforming a simple children's strike into a national incident. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This haunting, symbolic drama is set in a small Polish town in 1918. An officer in the Austrian army has come to stay in a hotel owned by a Jew. The officer was born in Poland, he is the only guest in the hotel, and the area itself would one day be the site where many Polish Jews and other prisoners were killed by the Nazis. Although he knows he cannot survive (he has tuberculosis), the officer still goes out hunting for a prisoner in the forest because he wants to know what it is like to kill someone. Parallels to the future German occupation of Poland are explored in greater depth when another lieutenant arrives at the hotel and engages the officer in conversation. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This drama by Jerzy Trojan concerns Janek (Jan Englert), an artist, who has parked himself on a street corner at a busy intersection in the city. He is supposed to meet his girlfriend there, but time goes by and then goes by some more, and she does not show up. While he occupies the passing day with vivid fantasies as to what will happen to her when she finally does come, flashbacks also show how he has treated her in the past. This lamentable past and imperfect future reveal just what kind of a person Janek really is. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

A Mother superior in a 17th-century convent finds herself possessed by the Devil in this Polish drama set in a convent of Ursuline nuns. Several attempts are made to exorcise the demon. While four priests attempt to banish the spirit, two more are burned at the stake for impregnating her. All but one of the other nuns allow Satan's minions to enter their bodies. An extremely devout priest uses every power at his disposal to exorcise them. But even self-flagellation cannot stop them. In desperation, the priest consults an aged rabbi who suggests that the "demons" are really manifestations of human nature. The priest then finds himself becoming possessed by the Mother Superior. Suddenly he desires her body and soul. To prove his desire, he murders two stable grooms. He then encounters the one unpossessed nun who has just spent a night of lovemaking with an aristocrat who has since tossed her out. She is terribly upset and the priest advises her to go back to the convent and tell the Mother Superior of the lecherous man's misdeeds. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Also known as Knights of the Teutonic Order, this historic epic is set in 15th-century Poland, during the time of the Teutonic invasion. Danusia (Grazyna Staniszewska), daughter of warrior Jurandt (Andrzej Szalawski), is in love with firebrand Zbyszko (Mieczylaw Kalenik). Zbyszko has sworn to avenge the death of Danusia's mother at the hands of the invaders. When he is captured by the Teutonic hordes, it is Danusia who comes to his rescue. Shortly thereafter, Danusia and Jurandt are captured and tortured. Zbyszko embarks upon a long odyssey to rescue his beloved, but by the time he finds her, she has been driven insane. After three hours' worth of Knights of the Black Cross (Polish title: Krzyzacy), the viewer might also feel a little touched in the head. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
