Ever angling for a profitable publicity stunt, itinerant peddlar Salmoneus (Robert Trebor) comes up with an enticing name for the upcoming event: The Olympic Games. Ramina (Josephine Davison), the future bride of King Bereaus (Joel Tobeck), is abducted by the warrior Tarlus (Marton Csokas) on the eve of her wedding. Knowing full well that Tarlus is not a villain by nature, Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) nonetheless promises Bereaus that he will bring Ramina back. Though the love-smitten girl refuses to leave Tarlus' side, Hercules is determined to fulfill his promise -- until he learns the whole truth behind the impending marriage. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Assuming the face and form of Hercules' sculptor friend Thanis (Paul Gittins), the hideously ugly shapeshifting god Proteus frames Thanis for murder. This he has done for the sake of love, reasoning that he would otherwise have no chance of winning the heart of Thanis' daughter, Daniella (Ashley Lawrence). It falls to Hercules to do battle with Proteus and to teach the errant god a lesson in "being yourself". The candidates of the 1996 U.S. presidential election are given a brief, good-natured ribbing in this episode. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Legendary half-human, half-god Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) continues his journeys throughout Greece and the known world to spread goodness and charity and defend the downtrodden as the character's weekly TV series enters its third season. Likewise, still on hand is Hercules' mortal friend and traveling companion, Iolaus (Michael Hurst), not to mention such colorful recurring characters as itinerant peddler Salmoneus (Robert Trebor), self-styled "King of Thieves" Autolycus (Bruce Campbell), impulsive goddess of love Aphrodite (Alexandra Tydings), malevolent god of war Ares (Kevin Smith), harsh but fair god of the Underworld Hades (Erik Thomson), and the never-seen Queen Hera, the spiteful immortal stepmother of Hercules, who continues wreaking havoc in her efforts to punish her husband, Hercules' Olympian father, Zeus.

New to the series is another antagonist, the ferocious female warrior (and later immortal) Callisto (Hudson Leick) -- one of several "crossover" characters from Hercules: The Legendary Journey's companion series Xena: Warrior Princess. An additional antagonist appears in the form of the aptly named Strife (Joel Toback), nephew of war gods Ares (Kevin Smith). Also introduced during season three is the beauteous demigod Serena, played by actress Sam Jenkins (aka Sam Sorbo), wife of series star Kevin Sorbo. Originally a pawn in the schemes of Callisto to destroy Hercules, Serena (who also goes by the name of the Golden Hind) instead falls in love with the mighty muscleman, leading to a tragically brief marriage between the two characters. But though Serena dies at the end of her story arc, her character would continue to pop up in future episodes with appropriate "explanations" given for her remarkable durability. Spicing up the proceedings with a bit of variety, season three offers the first of a handful of episodes set in a time period other than Ancient Greece. Laid in 18th century France during the revolution, "Les Contemptibles" sets the template for all subsequent "time-displacement" episodes by casting several of the familiar Hercules stars and recurring characters in markedly different roles -- presumably as means to prevent the actors from feeling as if they were getting in a rut. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

After five made-for-TV feature films designed to establish the principal character and his surroundings, Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) was awarded his own weekly, syndicated series, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. In the opening episode, Hercules' wife and children are consumed in a ball of flame -- and it is all the handiwork of his treacherous stepmother, the goddess Hera. Renouncing his father Zeus for allowing such a tragedy to occur, the embittered Hercules embarks upon a campaign of destruction and vengeance. He is ultimately restored to his proper path in life after rescuing the lovely Aegina (Clare Carey) from a human sacrifice -- and after endeavoring to save his friend Iolaus (Michael Hurst), who had been turned to stone. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) takes on a rampaging Cyclops (Richard Moll) who is seemingly in cahoots with our hero's treacherous stepmother, the goddess Hera. Along the way, Hercules picks up a traveling companion in the form of shabby traveling salesman Salmoneus (Robert Trebor). After joining forces to defeat their common enemy, Hercules and Salmoneus discover that the Cyclops is not exactly the heartless villain he seems to be -- and that there are two sides to every conflict. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Queen Camilla (Ilona Rodgers) summons Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) to tell him of her premonition that dire calamity will befall the annual festival of Dionysus. Reunited with the Seer (Norman Forsey) from the previous episode, "The Road to Calydon," Hercules is warned that the festival will be safe from harm only if Dionysus approves of the reigning king (Noel Trevarthen); if not, woe betide the hapless revellers. To make certain that the festival proceeds smoothly, Hercules must tangle with royal intrigue, the treachery of a certain warlike god, a deadly eel...and ten gorgeous virgins. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Nemis the Centaur (Cliff Curtis) is given the opportunity to avenge the death of his twin brother at the hands of Hercules (Kevin Sorbo)--who is at this moment en route to a wedding in the town of Nespa. Since Nemis also covets the bride Penelope (Jacqueline Collin), he looks forward not only to killing Hercules but claiming Penelope for himself. Upon his arrival, Hercules agrees to take on Nemis and his friends in a "friendly" game of combat--only to be rendered blind by the duplicitous Lyla, the girlfriend of one of Nemis's Centaur cronies. Lucy Lawless, later cast as warrior princess Xena, is seen as Lyla. This episode of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys contained the first of the series' semi-satirical disclaimers ("No Centaurs were harmed during the production of this picture"). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Back in his home village, Hercules visits his mortal mother Alcmene (Elizabeth Hawthorne) and pays homage to the memorial of his slain wife and children. Nearby, a band of settlers, including young lovers Cyrus (Nathaniel Lee) and Oi-Lan (Lucy Liu), are sold into slavery by treacherous merchant Balus (Stig Eldred). Hercules manages to buy Oi-Lan's freedom -- and, impressed by the girl's martial-arts skills, he agrees to help her rescue Cyrus. Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) and Iolaus (Michael Hurst) promise Felicita (Kyrin Hall) that they will try to rescue her wrongly enslaved husband, Gladius (Tony Todd). The poor man has been forced into gladiatoral combat with huge and hungry lions, all for the entertainment of the sadistic Menas Maximus (Ian Mune), the wealthiest man in Apropus and his equally venal wife Postera (Alison Bruce). Hercules exhorts the other gladiators to rise up and vanquish Menas -- but the villain has a couple of aces up his tunic sleeve. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) and his cousin Iloran (Dean O'Gorman) are determined to put an end to plundering and pillaging of warrior princess Xena (Lucy Lawless). As it turns out, however, the real villain of the piece is not Xena, but instead her treacherous lieutenant Darphus (Matthew Chamberlain). When Xena unexpectedly shows compassion in battle, Darphus accuses her of being unfit to lead her minions, forcing her to run the deadly Gauntlet ritual. This puts Hercules in the embarrassing position of having to join forces with his old enemy Xena in order to expunge the "greater evil." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Wrapping the greedy King Midas (Noel Trevarthen) around her little finger, the beautiful but treacherous Voluptua (Jennifer Ward-Leland) uses Midas' vast wealth to establish the Touch of Gold gambling palace. Upon realizing that the palace is actually a shrine to corruption and evil, Midas demands that it be destroyed, only to be locked up by Voluptua's minions. It is up to Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) to free the repentant Midas and foil Voluptua -- but first he is forced into a boxing match with the fearsome Segallus (Terry Batchelor) in order to rescue Midas' daughter Flaxen (Trac Lindsey), who has been strapped to an archaic booby trap. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

After capturing the barbarian leader Goth (Brian Thompson), Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) and Iolaus (Michael Hurst) endeavor to bring their prisoner to Athens to stand trial. Hot on our hero's heels is Goth's brother, Bledar (Ray Woolf), who will stop at nothing to free his sibling. Hercules, Iolaus, and Goth take refuge in a fortress where dwells Goth's former lover Elora (Rebecca Hobbs). Will she allow her heart to rule her head and betray the good guys?
