At some point in the not-so-distant future, an unnamed European city has evolved into a bizarre dystopian metropolis, whose residents inhabit towering utopian high-rises and work, collectively, in a single compound. Such is the backdrop of Austrian director Christian Frosch's intense and offbeat sci-fi thriller Silent Resident (AKA Weisse Lilien, 2007). Amid this strange onscreen environment, a young woman named Hannah (Brigitte Hobmeier) screams out for asylum from her physically abusive husband, Branco (Xaver Hutter). She ultimately grows so distraught that she flees from Branco on impulse - assisted by her friends, who help her move into the top floor of their facility. While Hannah's future brightens for a period, given her blossoming romance with the detective Hauks (Martin Wuttke) and the disappearance of Branco (who fails to turn up as expected after Hannah moves), the poor woman's paranoia builds - she constantly suspects that she is being watched by an unseen presence and learns of the dire fate of a previous occupant (whose body was spotted hurling from the upper balcony). Meanwhile, her friendships and romance with Hauks also begin to take on a decidedly odd character. Frosch filmed this saga at Alterlaa, formerly a utopian housing complex in Vienna, Austria. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

In this entertaining slice of life as lived by the very young, little Moritz (Dirk Müller) runs away from home to confront his whimsical alter ego and find some reassurance from unexpected quarters. Moritz has not been getting very good grades in school, and far from being able to face his parents with the truth, he is stymied by a father whose habit is to put up a "Do Not Disturb" warning on his closed study door. Left with little choice in the matter, the dejected Moritz packs up a few things and goes to hide in a Litfassäule. (The Litfassäule are hollow pillars on the street corners that display ads about activities around town, and the street sweepers store their brooms and equipment in their hollow interiors.) When Moritz gets settled with his blanket and clothing bag inside the pillar, up pops an animated cat - who plays the foil to Moritz so astutely that it eventually becomes clear he is the little boy's creation. The plot thickens, as the runaway meets a young girl from a traveling circus - who is the cat in another form! Protected by a friendly street sweeper, Moritz is on his way to learning even more about himself and the society around him. Director and writer Rolf Losansky has created an excellent adaptation of a children's book by Christa Kozik in this filmed version of Moritz' story. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Ottokar is a schoolchild whose sense of right and wrong is, some would say, a little overdeveloped. When he sees an injustice of any kind happening, he just has to intervene, despite the fact that he is only 10-years old and small for his age -- and many of the bullies he confronts are older and bigger than he is. Even though he is a whirlwind of righteousness, he is not a tale-telling goody-two-shoes. When a schoolmate tries to prove his manhood by drinking and behaving foolishly, Ottokar gets into trouble for failing to report the other fellow's misbehavior to school authorities. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
