Film director Juan Antonio Bardem was a problem for the Franco regime: he was too well known internationally for the government to shut him up completely, and too outspokenly left-wing to be left to function freely. He caused no end of problems for the Spanish regime. After Franco passed away, he was free to make more overtly pro-communist films, including Siete Dias de Enero, which won prizes and praise in Moscow when it was shown there. The story is based on an incident that occurred in Madrid in 1977, when some militant anti-communists gunned down a small gathering of communist lawyers. In the film, the murdered lawyers are shown as being outstanding paragons of idealism. Despite his previous importance and popularity as a filmmaker, this film was a definite failure at the boxoffice. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

The Pizza Triangle is a freewheeling satire of Italian mores, hilarious despite its outwardly morbid plotline. The murder of flower girl Monica Vitti triggers a long flashback involving Vitti, middle-aged Communist bricklayer Marcello Mastrioanni, and young pizza chef Giancarlo Giannini. The married Mastrioanni falls in love with Vitti, but Giannini gets in the way. A fight results, after which the girl is hospitalized. Declaring a truce, the three lovers move in together, allowing Vitti tie to decide whom she loves best. The subsequent discord nearly results in the girl's suicide; she moves out and takes up with butcher Hercules Cortes, but returns to Gianinni when he attempts suicide. The now unemployed and unmarried Mastrioanni shows up, and when Vitti refuses again to commit herself to any one man, another fight results--this time ending in Vitti's death. Also released as A Drama of Jealousy and Jealousy Italian Style, The Pizza Triangle was originally shown in Italy as Dramma della Gelosia--Tutti i Particolari in Cronaca. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The Hunt (original Spanish title: La Caza) involves a less-than-sentimental journey to the onetime battlefields of the Spanish Civil War. Three aging pro-Franco veterans of that tragic contretemps, joined by a teenaged boy, embark upon a rabbit hunt where once they had exchanged gunfire and ideologies. As tensions flare between the trio of grey-haired warriors, the rabbits bear the brunt: they are slaughtered without mercy, much to the dismay of the youngest member of the expedition. This inevitably leads to the accidental death of one of the hunters--and a virtual recreation of the pointless carnage of the Civil War. Director Carlos Saura cowrote his script for The Hunt with Angelino Fons. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The title of this Spanish film translates to Afternoon of the Bulls. Yes, it's a bullfighting picture, and yes, it cleaned up at the box-office in its native country. Part of the film's attraction was its casting of three genuine matadors in the leading roles. Domingo Ortega, Antonio Bienvenida and Enrique Vera are all fairly competent actors, but even if they'd been lousy the crowds would have flocked to see them. Set in "real time", Tardes de Toros takes place during a single, action-packed afternoon in the arena. Director Ladislao Vadja sticks to the job at hand, only briefly cutting away to such "inessentials" as romantic subplots. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
