Canadian Timothy Bond directed this effort that was filmed on location in Zimbabwe. The topical plot concerns an army captain (Patrick Bergin) who is attempting to deactivate the land mines that litter the countryside following the conclusion of a civil war in Angola. He works in tandem with doctor Hildy Koller (Desiree Nosbusch) who must care for the many injuries incurred by locals from the land mines. This was one of the very first action films to be lensed in Africa by a predominantly African crew. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

The plot of the futuristic made-for-TV thriller Killer Deal is predicated on the notion that a world-wide economic collapse in 2009 AD will utterly wipe out the Middle Class in America. In this not-so-brave new world, the rich and privileged Upper Class lives in Parkland, a luxurious walled community, while the Lower Class starves in the ruins of "Oldtown." With absolutely no jobs available, the poor are left with but one opportunity to escape their lot: to voluntarily donate their vital organs to the wealthy, who have bought into an organization known as "Eternity Life." The donors are provided with $10 million, which they can spend any way they wish in the 30-day period before their bodies are dissected, while their families are permitted to live in Parkland permanently. One of the few non-rich non-donors residing in the community is police sergeant James Quinn (Rick Rossovich), who is allowed to do so because of his past heroics. Unfortunately, the lives of Quinn and his family are placed in jeopardy when the elderly creator of "Eternity Life" desperately needs an organ donor to survive. Fleeing from Parkland, Quinn learns the hard way that the so-called "voluntary" donors are anything but! Originally telecast on March 25, 1999 as part of UPN's "Nightworld" movie series, Killer Deal has been released abroad as Nightworld: Parkland. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Aside from being in the title, none of the better-known pop music of the 1960s period is used in this film. In the story, German-speaking and French-speaking gangsterish Luxembourgers are in conflict with one another. It is New Year's Eve in Dudelange, and Rocco (Birol Uenel) is hard-pressed to continue avoiding these gangsters while attempting to woo the lovely Veronique (Desiree Nosbusch), who is the apple of many mens' eyes. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Except for the millionaire film producer, who undoubtedly only gets what he deserves, in this bedroom comedy almost everyone else on a luxury cruise liner headed for Mykonos seems to be having a good time with someone new. Doria (Jeanne Moreau) is a famed but aging opera singer whose career is necessarily drawing to a close: she is the top-billed entertainer for the voyage. Olga (Désirée Nosbusch) is the film producer's latest nubile discovery, Eric (Daniel Mesguich) is a journalist with a way with words and a weird new wife, and Andreas (Anthony Delon) is a handsome young man who is "available." He's quite available, actually, since he's a gigolo, but he finds himself quite passionate about his newest client. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

The always innovative Taviani Brothers pay homage to another unique filmmaker, D. W. Griffith, in Good Morning, Babylon. Vincent Spano and Joaquim de Almeida star as Nicola and Andrea Bonnano, the latest in a long line of Tuscany-born cathedral builders. Emigrating to America, the brothers settle in Los Angeles in 1915, even as director Griffith (Charles Dance) is preparing his epic production Intolerance. The boys are hired to help construct the massive sets for the film's Babylonian sequence (hence the title), for no other reason than the fact that Griffith is impressed by Italian craftsmanship. As the film progresses, Nicola and Andrea assimilate to their new surroundings, even launching a romance with a pair of pretty movie extras. On the verge of continuing the family tradition, the boys' ambitions are cut short by events well beyond their control. Still, their past artistic accomplishments, like those of their forebears, survive the ages -- but only on the ethereal silver screen. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this 90-minute film by director, writer, and film-critic Eckhardt Schmidt, the hero-worship that Simone (Desiree Nosbusch) has for a pop singer is built to a crescendo until she passes out when she finally sees him up-close in a crowd of fans pushing him for autographs. After she regains consciousness, she discovers that she is in the singer's dressing room and is shocked as he lets her know that he does not love her. In an instant, she is caught "in a trance" and feels a murderous urge that is bigger than the both of them. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Based on a novel by Irmgard Keun written in 1937, this film is a satire on the up-and-coming Germans of that time who desired to make the leap from comfortably well-off to rich and/or powerful. The bawdy cabarets and omnipresent swastikas and military police form a backdrop for these social climbers, as they are observed by an older teenage girl. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
