Upon her election by The New York Times as a "top celebutante" in 1986 (due to her popularity in N.Y.C.'s club scene), then-19-year-old Lisa Edelstein reportedly grew wary of "fame for fame's sake" and spent years grounding her celebrity in a series of well-respected, if minor, acting assignments. She made a small-scale debut in a prestigious film -- the role of the makeup artist in Oliver Stone's controversial Jim Morrison biopic The Doors (1991) -- and thereafter was often pigeonholed in sitcom appearances, typically as a comically eccentric girlfriend or wife. This typecasting characterized Edelstein's appearances on Seinfeld, Mad About You, Sports Night, Frasier, and a myriad of other programs. There were exceptions, though, as the actress also starred on the short-lived but critically acclaimed drama Relativity in the mid-'90s as Rhonda Roth, a lesbian whose complex, non-sensationalized portrayal marked a step forward for homosexual characters on network TV. Edelstein also garnered recurring roles on such series as The West Wing (playing a law student whom Rob Lowe's character romances until he finds out she moonlights as a call girl), Felicity, and Ally McBeal (appearing as a transsexual who dates a lawyer played by James LeGros).In-between bit parts in the big-screen comedies What Women Want (2000) and Daddy Day Care (2003), Edelstein received second billing on the sitcom Leap of Faith (2002), a kind of toned-down Sex and the City reworking for NBC (from the same producer), as Patty, the best friend of ad executive Faith Wardwell (Sarah Paulson). Unfortunately, that program failed to catch fire with the public, but Edelstein scored a lead role several years later on the hit medical drama House, in which she plays Dr. Lisa Cuddy, Dean of Medicine at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, who must constantly contend with the eccentricities and misanthropy of Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie). ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
Mika Kaurismaki directed this British-French-Finnish romantic comedy adapted from Richard Rayner's autobiographical novel about a series of Hollywood misadventures. Vacationing in the North of England, aspiring Los Angeles actress Barbara (Vinessa Shaw) stops briefly in a village where she meets town undertaker and obit writer Richard (David Tennant) -- who just can't stop thinking about her. Flying to California, Richard arrives at the Japanese restaurant where Barbara is a waitress, and a relationship begins -- while Richard learns about Hollywood at the hands of various hustlers and agents. An alcoholic cop turned private eye falls for the woman he's hired to investigate in this thriller produced for cable network HBO. Monied Zachariah Dodd (James Read) wants to divorce his wife, Eve (Gloria Reuben), so he hires recovering drunk Michael Nash (Luke Perry) to spy on her, hoping to prove she's an adulteress. Michael instead learns that she's a kindly woman who takes care of her elderly mother -- and endures physical abuse at Zachariah's hands. When Eve tries to commit suicide by drowning herself, he rescues her. Soon, the investigator and his subject find themselves caught up in a passionate affair. One night, Eve shows up claiming to have killed her husband after another domestic incident. Michael helps her cover up the crime and soon finds himself under suspicion of murder. Only attorney Beth Sussman (Lisa Edelstein), Michael's friend and employer, can save him from the meticulous detective (Peter Coyote) who's out to get him. Director Marc Bienstock previously collaborated with screenwriter Vladimir Nemirovsky on another thriller, 1997's The Beneficiary. Nemirovsky himself appears in the cast of Indiscreet, alongside Beverly Hills 90120 vet Luke Perry and ER actress Gloria Reuben. Lisa Edelstein guest stars as Caitlin, an earthy (in every sense of the word) artist. Art connoisseur Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) is entranced by Caitlin, though he insists that he is interested primarily in her talent and vivacity. This claim is a bit hard to accept, especially since Frasier and Caitlin "go at it" with animal-like intensity whenever they get together. This first episode of ER's fourth season originally aired live on September 25, 1997, with two separate telecasts for the East and West Coasts. A TV documentary crew follows Dr. Mark Greene (Anthony Edwards) during a "typical" shift in the emergency room of Chicago's County General Hospital. Still not completely recovered from a brutal beating, Greene is none too happy about being a "TV star," sentiments shared by the ER's attending physician Kerry Weaver (Laura Innes), who regards the camera crew as an invasion of everyone's privacy. As it turns out, the documentary makers get more than they bargained for as they record for posterity a gang fight, an out-of-control patient, and a heart attack. In the midst of all this confusion, Dr. Elizabeth Corday (Alex Kingston) arrives from England to witness American surgical procedures. The syndicated version of "Ambush" combines scenes from both the East and West Coast broadcasts, expunging a number of conspicuous continuity errors and an embarrassing moment in which a crucial prop is misplaced. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The 1939 Irene Dunne-Charles Boyer romance Love Affair, remade with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr in 1957 as An Affair to Remember, became a vehicle for real-life couple Warren Beatty and Annette Bening in this 1994 rendition. The well-worn story remains the same, as a man and a woman, both engaged to other people, fall madly in love while traveling, indulge in a brief but intense affair, then agree to part and sort out their feelings. They are to meet again at the top of the Empire State Building if their feelings persist, but a series of unfortunate circumstances threatens to keep the lovers apart. Despite polished visuals and a time-tested narrative, this variation suffers in comparison to its two predecessors, not to mention the previous year's Sleepless in Seattle, which had drawn on An Affair to Remember for several of its most memorable sequences. Soon after announcing the cancellation of her engagement, actress Sharon Stone appears on The Larry Sanders Show, and an elated Larry (Garry Shandling) proposes that the two go on a date. Despite the fact that all seems to be going well during their first date, Artie (Rip Torn) warns Larry that he may be headed for rough waters with his new relationship. When the womanizing host gets a taste of his own medicine, Larry proves fairly resilient, though Hank (Jeffrey Tambor) doesn't take the break-up quite so easily. Following advice dispensed by Antonio (Tony Shalhoub), mechanic Lowell (Thomas Haden Church) demands a raise from Joe (Tim Daly) and Roy (David Schramm) by claiming he's been offered a higher-paying job in Boston. The plan backfires when both Joe and Roy advise Lowell to accept that better job -- which, of course, does not exist. Paul goes through the classic stages of zaniness when his former girlfriend Lynne Stoddard (Lisa Edelstein) pays a visit to New York. The fun, however, really begins when wife Jamie (Helen Hunt) takes Paul up on his suggestion that she meet Lynne at their favorite restaurant. Val Kilmer delivers what was considered one of 1991's best performances as Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone's hallucinatory bio-pic of the seminal 1960s rock group The Doors. Stone cuts a jagged swath through Morrison's life, starting with a childhood memory where Morrison sees an elderly Indian dying by the roadside. It picks up with Morrison's arrival in California and his assimilation into the Venice Beach culture, followed by his film school days at UCLA; his introduction to his girlfriend Pamela Courson (Meg Ryan); his first encounters with Ray Manzarek (Kyle MacLachlan); and the origin of The Doors -- made up of Manzarek, Robby Kreiger (Frank Whaley), and John Densmore (Kevin Dillon). As the fame of The Doors grows, Morrison's obsession with death increases. The band grows weary of Morrison's missed recording sessions and no-shows at concerts. Morrison, meanwhile, sinks deeper into a drug-induced haze, having mystical sexual encounters with Patricia Kennealy (Kathleen Quinlan), an older rock journalist involved with sadomasochism and witchcraft. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide
