A Roman soldier (Michael Fassbender) leads a small band of troops on a mission to rescue a key Roman general after becoming trapped in the territory of their sworn enemies in this period action-adventure film from director Neil Marshall (The Descent, Doomsday). The year is A.D. 117. Despite the growing strength of the Roman Empire, a fierce tribe known as the Picts has prevented Hadrian's armies from conquering northern Britain. In this contemporary thriller set in Scotland, two women, Dorothy (Susan Lynch) and Petula (Rachel Weisz), bond over a dangerous encounter. Petula is being routinely beaten by her boyfriend Brian (Tom Mannion); Dorothy, after having left her unstable relationship with Tony (Iain Glen), accidentally kills Brian in a fit of rage. In desperation, the two women forge a bizarre scheme to convince Brian's older, more powerful brother Ronnie (Maurice Roeves) that Brian has been kidnapped. Their plan hits a snag, however, when Detective Inspector Hepburn (Alex Norton) begins to suspect the women and offers to be on the take for their intended get-rich plan. Soon after, Tony also re-emerges and also wants in on the deal, leaving the two women to compose a different plan. Anthony Burgess translated and adapted this staging of Edmond Rostand's 19th century theatrical classic. Derek Jacobi (of I Claudius) fame stars as Cyrano de Bergerac, the ski-nosed poet, philosopher and swordsman. Believing that the beautiful Roxanne will shrink from his ugliness, Cyrano woos her by proxy, feeding the handsome but empty-headed Christian the honey'd words of love that will win the lady's heart. Jacobi is given powerhouse support by the Royal Shakespeare Company, including the exquisite Sinead Cusack as Roxanne. Bill Forsyth displays some of the fey quirkiness that would distinguish his later, better-known directorial efforts in 1979's That Sinking Feeling. The film details the misadventures of four aimless Scottish youths, who impulsively steal a shipment of stainless-steel sinks. Once they've made off with their booty, the boys have quite a time unloading it on prospective buyers. Much of the humor is verbal, which can be a trial for viewers unwilling to decipher the cast's thick Glasgow accents.
