In this standard, stereotypical, youth-oriented film, Mona (Claudia Demarmels) has just received the awful news that she has to move out of her apartment because her landlady plans on turning it over to her son -- and so the impossible quest for an affordable place begins. As Mona goes from door to door looking for her ideal new home, she encounters one adventure after another -- and unconsciously or not, seems headed toward a knight in shining armor and another good apartment all in one package. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this, the third, remake of Gotthelf's classic horror story, a woman offers the soul of her unborn baby in exchange for Satan's intervention in a situation that threatens her village. Unlike it's two predecessors, this version is told without operatic embellishment and is framed by the modern-day story of a drug-addicted woman who has a strange drug-induced dream about the woman in village. In the dream, the threat comes in the form of the ruthless knight who brutalizes and terrorizes all the villagers. The woman reneges on the bargain by having the babe immediately baptized after it is born. Satan gets his revenge by sending a murderous black spider into town. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Director Bernard Safarik based this straightforward story on his own experiences, and on Czech writer Jaroslav Vejvoda's stories about the difficulties of Eastern European refugees -- both in obtaining a visa and later adjusting to life in a new country with a different socio-economic system. The film focuses on a Czech artist bent on leaving Prague for Switzerland, showing that his visions of a new life and how to reach it are routinely shattered by the everyday reality of finding asylum. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Though director Fritz Lang, who started the "Dr. Mabuse" ball rolling back in 1922, had washed his hands of the series in the early 1960s, the Mabuse films kept popping up throughout the decade. This one stars Lex Barker as a New York detective investigating the criminal activities of the supposedly deceased evil genius Mabuse (Wolfgang Preiss). The bad doctor wants to get his paws on "Operation X", a serum that makes people invisible. Karin Dor, playing the daughter of the facially disfigured inventor of Operation X, is kidnaped by Mabuse and becomes a human bargaining chip. The Invisible Dr. Mabuse (original German title: Die Unsichtbaren Krallen des Dr. Mabuse) was released in some markets as The Invisible Horror. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
