A few good men are sent on a secret mission as a few good women in this comic tale of wartime espionage, loosely based upon a true story. Steven O'Rourke (Matt LeBlanc) is an American intelligence agent who, during World War II, has been assigned to obtain an Enigma machine, a special encoding-and-decoding device that Axis forces have developed to transmit their most sensitive secret information. A working Enigma machine would be invaluable to the Allied cause; O'Rourke is able to obtain a machine, but Col. Aiken (Edward Fox), a British officer whose stiff upper lip sometimes overwhelms his common sense, mistakes O'Rourke for a plunderer and destroys the previous gadget, which is hidden in a typewriter. An altercation with Aiken lands O'Rourke in military prison, but he's released in time to carry out a new plan to obtain an Enigma for Allied use. A small factory has been set up in rural Germany to build the machines, which is entirely staffed by women, so O'Rourke, communications expert Johnno (David Birkin), and veteran intelligence man Archie (James Cosmo) are to infiltrate the plant disguised as women, with Tony (Eddie Izzard), an agent who moonlights as a drag performer, giving the men a crash course in looking and acting like women. All the Queen's Men also features Nicolette Krebitz as Romy, a double agent working at the Enigma plant, and Udo Kier as Lansdorf, a Nazi general. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

The true story of Hasso Herschel inspired this epic Cold War drama from Germany. Harry Melchoir (Heino Ferch) was a respected German athlete when the Berlin Wall forcibly divided the nation in 1961. Unwilling to cooperate with the East German authorities, Melchoir escaped to West Berlin, along with his friends Matthis (Sebastian Koch), Vic (Mehmet Kurtulus), and Fred (Felix Eitner). When he fled to West Germany, Melchoir was forced to leave his family behind, and he fears for the fate of his sister Lotte (Alexandra Maria Lara). Eager to free Lotte from East German rule, Melchoir strikes upon the idea of building a tunnel under the wall that will allow her to leave the country undetected; Melchoir recruits Matthis, Vic, and Fred to help him, along with a resourceful woman named Fritzi (Nicolette Krebitz). It isn't long before Melchoir and his compatriots discover that many others want to help their friends and family escape the East German regime, and the simple tunnel turns into a massive building and engineering project that's both ambitious and fraught with danger for all parties concerned. Der Tunnel was produced as a two-part miniseries for German television; an edited feature-length version was prepared for possible theatrical release outside Europe. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

The question is just who's setting up whom in this stylish crime drama from Germany. A woman named Melody (Nicolette Krebitz) is making a drug buy when to the surprise of the dealers, she pulls a gun and police burst into the room. Despite outward appearances, Melody is not a cop -- she's being blackmailed by Kahnitz (Dietrich Hollinderbaumer), a police chief who uses her as a decoy for various assignments. Ben (Marc Hosemann), a safecracker, is about to be released from jail, and Kahnitz wants to tie him to another crime involving Ben and his partner Dennis (Martin Gladde), who was in on the job that sent Ben to prison but managed to avoid capture. Claiming to be a friend of Dennis, Melody (under Kahnitz's instructions) meets Ben shortly after he hits the street and tries to encourage him to pull another job. She also seduces Ben and introduces him to Percy (Axel Milberg) and Aurelia (Sunnyi Melles), a couple who have their own ties to the crimes. Long Hello and Short Goodbye was adapted from a screenplay by American writer Jeff Vintar -- perhaps appropriate, given the frequent comparisons made between director Rainer Kaufmann's work and that of American filmmaker Brian DePalma. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Along the way, they take an American hostage and give impromptu concerts. This docudrama makes a desultory attempt to recount some of the details in the life of Germany's leading activist for prostitute's rights and spokesperson advocating acceptance of sado-masochism, Domenica. Her mother is played by the well known actress Andrea Ferreol. Given the potential for the filmmakers to have made an interesting drama out of the elements of Domenica's life, reviewers expressed considerable disappointment in this film. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
