Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) has been tortured to death, but the bad guys get a doctor (Peter Gregory) to revive him. Prescott (Alan Dale) is planning to have the cabinet declare Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) unfit, so he can take over and resume the military operation. He urges Mike (Jude Ciccolella) to keep Palmer from finding out. Mike has Lynne (Michelle Forbes) locked up in a room to keep her quiet, but she uses the traditional TV method (set a small fire to set off the alarm) to escape. Her guard catches up with her, they struggle, and she takes a bad fall. The thugs who beat up Yusuf (Donnie Keshawarz) are making off with his cash, and the microchip. Kate (Sarah Wynter) urges them to give the chip to her. She says if they take her home she'll give them money for it. Chapelle (Paul Schulze) shows up at CTU, and orders Tony (Carlos Bernard) to forget about Jack's wild goose chase and prepare for war. Tony sticks to his guns. Palmer has been unable to reach Prescott, and grows suspicious. He asks Pierce (Glenn Morshower), a secret service agent, if he should be worried. With the doctor's help, Jack manages to escape his attackers, and finds out that they're working for Kingsley (Tobin Bell). He calls Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) and has her look for any info on Kingsley. He gets to the meeting place, but it's too late to save Yusuf, who tells him, with his dying breath, that the thugs took the chip and went to Kate's house. Jack shows up in time to save Kate's neck, but one of the thugs holds the chip hostage. Carrie (Lourdes Benedicto) tries to manipulate the chaos at CTU to her advantage. Palmer finds out that Lynne has been hurt. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

His military advisors warn him that if they miss the opportunity for a surprise attack, American casualties will increase. Jack calls Tony (Carlos Bernard) to tell him that Wallace is dead, but Jack has the microchip containing the evidence that the Cypress recording was a fake. Yusuf (Donnie Keshawarz) discovers that there's a tracking device attached to the chip, so he removes it, and Jack takes it to lure away the bad guys, making arrangements to meet Kate (Sarah Wynter) and Yusuf later on. He tells them to go to CTU without him if he's doesn't show. Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) convinces Tony to contact Palmer and tell him that Jack has the evidence. Palmer calls off the bombing, despite the advice of Lynne (Michelle Forbes) and Mike (Jude Ciccolella). Mike says he has a source in Defense, and asks Lynne to meet with him. Jack is captured by the bad guys, who take him back into the emergency clinic and torture him, demanding to know where the chip is. They put him on the phone with their boss, Kingsley (Tobin Bell). Jack refuses to talk, and the torture continues. Michelle tells Tony the truth about her ugly history with Carrie (Lourdes Benedicto). Chapelle (Paul Schulze) calls Tony to tell him that he and his people from division are on their way to take over. Tony (Carlos Bernard) and Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) have escaped relatively unscathed from the explosion at CTU, but Paula (Sara Gilbert) is badly injured and trapped under debris, and they need her to decrypt CTU's files on the nuke. Leading the transgen resistance, Max (Jessica Alba) finds an unexpected ally in C.J. (Henri Lubatti), who claims to have broken ranks with White's anti-transgen Familiars. Alas, it turns out that C.J. cannot be trusted -- and is far too close to White (Martin Cummins) for anyone's comfort. It might just be that the key to the many confusing plot points raised in this penultimate Dark Angel episode may rest with the curious runic "tattoos" that have begun appearing all over Max's body. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Elsewhere, Detective Kate Lockley (Elisabeth Rohm) gets fired from the LAPD for her obsession with the occult. Meanwhile, Angel (David Boreanaz) learns that one of the senior partners of Wolfram & Hart, a fearsome Kleynack demon, will be arriving on earth soon for the firm's violent 75-year review. Angel decides to take his battle with the firm all the way to the bottom -- to hell, where he will confront the senior partners on their home turf. After basically stealing a book from Wes and Cordy and further alienating his former comrades, he turns to Denver (Brett Rickaby), the same bookstore proprietor who helped him 50 years earlier (see "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been?"). Denver gives him a mystic gauntlet that will allow him to kill the visiting Kleynack demon and steal the magical ring with which it travels between dimensions. Unfortunately, Darla (Julie Benz), who has been recovering from her burns at the apartment of smitten lawyer Lindsey McDonald (Christian Kane), has also learned of the impending review. She arrives at the bookstore, kills Denver, steals the glove and runs Angel through with a sword. Later, both Darla and Angel crash the Wolfram & Hart review, and Angel manages to get his hands on both the gauntlet and the ring. When he puts it on, the deceased Holland Manners (Sam Anderson) arrives to take him in an elevator to hell. As it turns out, though, the elevator leads not to hell, but back to earth -- for, as Holland explains, evil is everywhere and inside everyone. As the bitter Kate lies near death, having washed down a bottle of pills with liquor, a demoralized Angel returns home to find Darla waiting for him. He falls nihilistically into bed with her and awakens in what appears to be the same agony that beset him after making love to Buffy and losing his soul (see Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Innocence").
