Joel and Ethan Coen take on the classic battle-of-the-sexes screwball comedy with Intolerable Cruelty. George Clooney plays Miles Massey, a high-powered Los Angeles divorce lawyer nearing a midlife crisis . While representing wealthy client Rex Rexroth (Edward Herrmann), Miles meets his match in Rex's gold-digging wife, Marilyn Rexroth (Catherine Zeta-Jones). He's impressed by her similarly heartless ways of using marriage to fuel an expensive lifestyle, but he still defeats her in court. With Marilyn looking to get her revenge and Miles finding himself attracted to her, the two engage in a ruthless romantic pursuit to out-swindle each other. Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter) goes on a date with a boring but rich hunk while Angel (David Boreanaz) and Doyle (Glenn Quinn) bust some vampire butt. One of the vamps escapes and attacks Cordy, whose date flees in terror. Doyle saves the day, and a light goes off in Cordy's little head that maybe the Angel's sidekick is worth getting to know a little big better. Just as things seem to be moving to the next stage, however, a face from Doyle's past shows up -- Harry (Kristin Dattilo), his estranged ethnodemonologist wife, who wants to obtain a divorce so she can remarry. Her fiancé, Richard Straley (Carlos Jacott), turns out to be part of a tribe of demons who have given up their barbaric ways and adopted human guises. Doyle grudgingly gives his blessing to the union, whereupon Harry convinces Doyle and Angel to attend Richard's bachelor party and Cordelia to attend her own shower. As the parties progress simultaneously, Cordelia makes a horrifying discovery about the traditions of Richard's clan -- just as the groom-to-be's brothers are preparing to force Doyle to participate in a grotesque and deadly ritual. Originally broadcast November 16, 1999, on the WB network, "The Bachelor Party" marked season one, episode seven of the supernatural comedy drama. In a twist on typical male and female names, Doyle's wife, Harry, calls him Francis, revealing that his full name is Allen Francis Doyle. During the scenes in which she considers a romance with "fixer-upper" Doyle, Cordy alludes to her abortive relationship with Xander Harris in seasons two and three of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. ~ Brian J. This TV-dramatization tells the story of marital abuse, but with a slight twist in the formula: the abuser and abused are young, upper-middle-class newlyweds. Kellie Martin is fresh-faced wife and young-mother Katie, who goes against her parents' better judgment and marries the good-looking but shady Jim (Ivan Sergei). Soon after their marriage, Katie realizes her husband has explosive and violent anger, but repeatedly accepts his apologies. After doing everything in her power to hide the truth from her police-officer father (Kevin Dobson), she finally comes clean to her family and tries to leave, facing the ultimate confrontation with Jim. Somewhat typical in its characterizations, the movie is notable for Martin's believable performance as the resigned victim. ~ Bernadette McCallion, All Movie Guide

This effective made-for-TV supernatural thriller (based on the novel Virgin by James Patterson) involves the travails of a Catholic priest (Anthony John Denison) who is ordered by his superiors to investigate the prospect of two separate virgin births -- one of which will bring the Son of God into the world, the other the Son of Satan. Unfortunately, there is no overt indication as to which child is which. Omen-style apocalyptic portents abound as the forces of Evil throw a variety of obstacles in Denison's path, even possessing the soul of the nun (Sela Ward) who is assisting him. Potent, gripping stuff -- and very intense for a TV movie -- this retains much of the metaphysical punch of its source material. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

In this straightforward horror film, a new widow (Karen Black) and her daughter (Rainbow Harvest) have just moved into a new home. They don't discover until much later that the previous owner was mad, mad, mad. By then, the mirror that the woman left behind in the house has served its purpose as a gateway to demonic worlds, and the evil ones have wreaked havoc in this one. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
