Also known as Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness, The Phantom Chariot was the most famous of Swedish director Victor Sjöstrom's pre-Hollywood films. Based on a novel by Selma Lagerlöf, the film is predicated on an ancient Scandanavian legend. It is said that each year, on St. Sylvester's Night (New Year's Eve), a phantom chariot materializes to carry off the souls of those who have sinned. On one such occasion, David Holm (played by Sjöstrom) is forced to recall his past misdeeds, especially his brutal treatment of his wife. Holm's only hope for salvation lies in his performing a spectacular act of selflessness. As the chariot approaches, Holm despairs: how can he possibly be redeemed before the clock strikes twelve? Sjöstrom's masterful direction is superbly complemented by Julius Jaenzon's multi-exposure cinematography. When artists like Victor Sjöstrom and Mauritz Stiller were lured away by Hollywood, their exodus very nearly brought the wrath of "The Phantom Chariot" on the entire Swedish film industry. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This Swedish-made adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's dramatic poem, "Terje Viken" helped its director/star Victor Seastrom gain attention in the United States. Terje Viken (Seastrom) is a fisherman who lives on an island that is blockaded during a war. He tries to outwit an enemy ship to bring home food and supplies but is captured and thrown in prison. When he gets out five years later, he discovers that his wife (Bergliot Hausberg) and child died of starvation the day he was caught. He becomes a recluse and swears revenge on the man who caused his suffering. But when he gets his opportunity, the sound of a child's voice inspires him to overcome his hatred. ~ Janiss Garza, All Movie Guide
Adapted from a play by Johann Sigurjonson, director Victor Sjöström's Berg-Ejvind och Hans Hhustru is considered one of the first major films of Swedish cinema. The 1918 silent drama stars Victor Sjöström as Berg-Eyvind, a drifter who begins working on the farm of a widow named Halla (Edith Erastoff). The couple falls in love only to have it revealed that Berg-Eyvind is a thief on the run after stealing a ship. Together, the lovers escape into the mountains of Iceland where many criminals before them have sought refuge. Released in the United States under the title You and I, Berg-Ejvind och Hans Hhustru was restored in 1966. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide
