This Russian adventure drama tells of 19th-century explorers in the Arctic region who go in search of a valley where a legendary lost community lives. Some of them are looking for gold. The last report of this paradisiacal community was from the explorer Sannikov, almost 400 years before. After a number of adventures, they discover the legendary warm land they seek. Their presence is resisted by the people's shaman. When one of the explorers, in his greed for gold, accidentally sets off an avalanche, it alters the climate of the region, and it begins to freeze, soon to be lost forever. This film is based on the book by a famed scientist and explorer, Nikolai Obruchev, and was very popular in Russia at the time of its release; its two songs became hits. This subsequently became a cult film, and two of the actors who appear in it, Vladislav Dvorzhetsky and Oleg Dal, died young and became cult figures in their own right. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Based on a novel by Stanislaw Lem, Solaris centers on widowed psychologist Kris Kelvin (Donata Banionis), who is sent to a space station orbiting a water-dominated planet called Solaris to investigate the mysterious death of a doctor, as well as the mental problems plaguing the dwindling number of cosmonauts on the station. Finding the remaining crew to be behaving oddly and aloof, Kelvin is more than surprised when he meets his seven-years-dead wife Khari (Natalya Bondarchuk) on the station. It quickly becomes apparent that Solaris possesses something that brings out repressed memories and obsessions within the cosmonauts on the space station, leaving Kelvin to question his perception of reality. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival, Solaris was remade by Steven Soderbergh in 2002. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

The English title is a translation of the Russian word "Beg," which means run, flight or escape. This lavish USSR epic film examines the lives of a number of White Russians. "White" Russians, in contrast to "Red" Russians, were active opponents of the Bolshevik Revolution and included among their number many notable intellectuals and aristocrats. Indeed, from 1917 until well into the 1920's there was an active counterrevolution in parts of what became the USSR. After the film's White Russians fled the revolution, it details the humiliations they endured in Paris and Turkey, and the experience of those who returned to Soviet Russia. This film is notable in that it tells the story of their difficulties in a remarkably sympathetic fashion. Directors Alov and Naumov were given wide latitude by Soviet authorities, and made other notable (and internationally acclaimed) epic films such as The Legend of Til Eulenspiegel, and Teheran '43. Among the highlights of this film are performances by Mikhail Ulyanov as General Tchernota and Vladislav Dvorzhelsky as Khludov. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
