In this French comedy, sisters Murielle (Isabella Ferron) and Victoria (Isabel Otero) are married to men who hate each other -- high-school teacher Bernard (Bernard Campan) and well-to-do Didier (Didier Bourdon), pharmacist in a posh Paris neighborhood. Both chain-smoke, and this leads to a cigarette challenge as they attempt to stop smoking for two weeks in order to prove who is the better man. Quitting brings on manic mood swings, massive food consumption, insomnia, and a host of habits that alter their lives and threaten their marriages. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

Circumstances force an unexpected maturity onto 15-year-old Tristan (Fernando Ramallo), an only child who had already been trying quite hard to "grow up" by losing his virginity. He accomplishes this easily enough by arranging for a prostitute to visit his home while his parents are off on a trip. But the life lesson he learns is different from what he'd intended when he learns of his parents' death in an airplane crash. When he moves into his grandparent's home, changes schools and falls in love for the first time, he is no longer able to keep intact his earlier snobberies and childish self-importance. This Spanish-language film is set in the later period of Francisco Franco's rule ('60s and '70s) and features excellent performances by its young cast. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In post-Franco Spain, a woman is hard-pressed to figure out what the new rules for women are. In this melodrama based on the novel by Almudena Grandes, Malena (newcomer Adriana Gil) explores life and relationships in the ever-changing world she finds herself in. Complicating matters for Malena is the example of her older sister, Reina, who is impeccably well-behaved. What's a girl to do except seek solace in the arms of as many men as possible? As she stumbles from catastrophe to catastrophe, Malena becomes her family's poster-child for what not to do with one's life. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In this highly symbolic, moody and artistic film, a young composer supposes that he has given his life over to passion. When his girlfriend dies, he impetuously promises her ghost that he will commit suicide in one month if he doesn't hear the word "passion" from the lips of a woman. The woman he decides to seek the word of life or death from is a French woman named Aphrodite. He became acquainted with Aphrodite, when she was a young girl, in Greece after an air crash which took the lives of all the other passengers. He follows her to Paris and begins his dangerous, suicidal and extremely intellectual game in earnest. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This romance is more a series of idyllic, intense sexual encounters between a married woman and her lover than a psychological study or event-filled melodrama. Viviane (Isabelle Otero) has only been married to Antoine (Robin Renucci) for three years when her passion for Vincent (Hippolyte Girardot), the hired hand in her husband's stables, takes over and she leaves Antoine. Viviane and Vincent end up at her brother's cabin on the beach, where they hope to spend as much time in carnal embrace as possible. Interrupting their plans is Vincent's horse, who suffers a wound that demands the care of a vet and changes the situation entirely. Excellent cinematography captures the sensual, evocative natural backdrops that provide a setting for the lovers' encounters. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
