Norwegian director Nils Gaup takes the helm for this sweeping Nordic epic tracing the struggle of the indigenous Sami people against the Swedish exploiters who reap the profits of their misery and desperation. Swedish entrepreneur Ruth (Mikael Persbrandt) is the proprietor of a Kautokeino trading post that also doubles as a popular pub. It's one of the few places that the semi-nomadic Sami can go to purchase essential living supplies and knock back a few drinks. The situation gets complicated when alcoholism begins to run rampant among the Sami men, the reindeer herds are neglected, and the women prove incapable of taking on the responsibility due to their depleted numbers. Enraged by her people's indifference and disturbed by her husband Mathis (Aslat Mahtte Gaup)' constant state of drunkenness, obstinate Sami Elen (Anni-Kristiina Juuso) determines to invoke a positive change by encouraging her husband and neighbors to purchase their supplies from the neighboring town of Karesuando. Once there, the group is taken by the fire and brimstone sermons of charismatic preacher Laestadius (Michael Nyqvist), who condemns the sins of alcohol and vice. Their eyes suddenly opened, Mathis vows to put down the bottle and Elen begins preaching Laestadius' word around Kautokeino. As a result, Ruth's business suffers and a new pastor arrives in town to quell the dissent. This development doesn't sit too well with the outspoken Elen, who gathers the rest of the Sami and leads the march to Ruth's to settle the matter once and for all. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Babies are supposed to bring families together, but the lack of one is doing just the opposite for one hapless couple in this domestic comedy from Sweden. Johan (Jonas Karlsson) is a twenty-something with no particular ambitions in life who is living with his wife Karin (Johanna Sallsstrom) on a farm run by his father Henrik (Ralph Carlsson). Henrik wants Johan to take over the farm some day, but while he's willing to work there until something better happens along, he's not sure he wants to make it his life's work. However, Sara soon receives a call from the police -- it seems Kent was comatose but not dead, and while he's lost the use of the lower half of his body, he will survive. Now confined to a wheelchair, Kent returns home, with Sara and Stefan nervous and unsure if he remembers the particulars about the incident that crippled him. As they try to determine what he does and doesn't know, they're filled with pity, fear, and anger as his violent nature begins to manifest itself once again. The second feature from Lukas Moodysson, who directed the internationally acclaimed Fucking Åmål, Tillsammans is the tale of life on a Stockholm commune in the mid-'70s. After suffering more than her share of abuse from her husband, Rolf (Michael Nyqvist), Elisabeth (Lisa Lindgren) takes her two children, Stefan (Sam Kessel) and Eva (Emma Samuelsson), to a commune run by her brother Göran (Gustav Hammarsten). Life at the commune is crowded with people with laid-back attitudes towards sex, nudity, and recreational drug use, prompting plenty of political debate. Göran's partner, Lena (Anja Lundkvist), is a particular proponent of free-spirited bed-hopping, something Göran doesn't really like but tolerates. Lena duly gets involved with the rebellious Erik (Olle Sarri) and finds fulfillment in the form of her first orgasm, something that leads her to confess to Göran that she was always faking it with him. Meanwhile, various dramas are at work amongst the other commune members, including the once-married Lasse (Ola Norell) and Anna (Jessica Liedberg) (who split up when Anna announced she was a lesbian) and Klas (Shanti Roney), whose advances to Lasse are continually rebuffed. The goings-on of the commune are observed and commented on by a pair of neighbors, Margit (Therese Brunnander) and Ragner (Claes Hartelius), whose marriage is so lackluster that Ragner masturbates compulsively. Their son, the fat and miserable Fredrik (Henrik Lundström), befriends Elisabeth's daughter, Eva, who longs to have a family again. When Rolf appears on the scene seeking reconciliation, it seems Eva may get her wish. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi

A frustrated thespian tries to bring the joys of the theater to a group of convicts in this Swedish comedy. Reine (played by Bjorn Kjellman) is an out-of-work actor in dire need of a job; as a last resort, he takes a position at a high-security prison. He discovers the prison has a room that is set up like a theater, prompting a brainstorm -- he can organize a prison theatrical troupe. A handful of inmates volunteers, though their interest has less to do with a love of drama and more to do with the possible opportunity to escape. But the drama club becomes just popular enough that Ekman (Thomas Hanzon), a long-term inmate who is the unofficial leader of the criminal population behind bars, feels his "authority" is being challenged, and he's not shy about using violence to restore the proper balance of power. Based in part on a true story, Vagen Ut (aka Breaking Out) was the debut feature from TV director Daniel Lind Lagerlof; it was shown to critical and public acclaim at the 1999 Gothenburg Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Filmmaker Lisa Ohlin, known for her TV work and short films, directed this Swedish drama. Author Thomas (Johan Hison Kjellgren) argues with his wife, visits a bar, and runs into his childhood friend Hoffman (Krister Henriksson), now a cancer-ridden alcoholic. The two haven't seen each other in 35 years. Hoffman recalls Thomas' play Waiting for a Tenor and suggests they film it with Hoffman in the leading role -- the opera-lover Henning. Thomas finds funding, and they collaborate on a screenplay, set during the summer of 1961, recalling their own childhood experiences. Ohlin intertwines the present with the past -- when Thomas' father Henning, his wife, and Thomas are at their summer house, and the father promises his son that an internationally famous Swedish tenor will soon visit. The film combines color (present-day sequences) with black and white (childhood scenes). ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

The title of this Swedish film refers to both a ticking clock and a time bomb. The narrative, in the tradition of Slacker (1991), Short Cuts (1993), and Pulp Fiction (1994) explores angst and despair in the lives of a variety of lovers, loners, and losers -- young Micke (Oliver Loftien), planning arson on his school; his classmate Jeanette (Tuva Novotny); skinheads Lasse (Emil Forselius) and Jorma (Mats Helin), hanging at a bar where they get an offer from immigrant Pedro (Claudio Salgado); a cop, Niklas (Thomas Hanzon), and his buddy Tommy (Douglas Johansson). Niklas has victimized Kent (Jacob Nordennson), whose wife Ylva (Tintin Anderzon) tries to defuse his anger and frustration. The events seen in the film all take place in a 24-hour period. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi
