Veteran actors Guylaine Tremblay and Guy Jodoin headline director Bernard Émond's grim tale about a struggling directory assistance operator who takes decisive action after falling into dire straits. Réjeane has just been downsized as a result of corporate restructuring, and this harsh blow couldn't have come at a worse time: her husband Gilles (Jodoin) is currently on the mend from a massive stroke and the couple desperately needs money to pay his medical bills. When Réjeane learns that the president of the company that laid her off is earning $16 million a year, the injustice off seeing so many of her co-workers rendered destitute by the downsizing lights a fuse within her that will not be extinguished. Later, while being questioned in a police interrogation room, the stoic seeker of justice proves unable to summon the words to justify her drastic actions. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

A joint project of the CBC TV network and the Raido-Canada service, this ambitious documentary series traced the History of Canada literally from the beginning--15,000 BC, to be exact. The subsquent episodes were nothing if not ambitious, covering the progress of the Dominion right up to 1850 AD. The seventeenth and final episode, covering the years 1976 to 1990, was open-ended enough to bear the title "In An Uncertain World". Three years in the making, the series utilized interviews, rare photographs, precious paintings and etchings, and vividly dramatic re-enactments. Telecast in English and French versions, Canada: A People's History ran from October 22, 2000 to November 18, 2001, yielding such ancillary projects as a two-volume book, a website, and a bestselling CD. ~ All Movie Guide

A documentary containing many dramatized moments, this Canadian outing chronicles the September 3, 1759 "Battle of the Plains of Abraham," a key moment in Canadian history in which the English won dominion over the French in Quebec. The saga begins as the filmmakers interview aspiring rock musician Andrew Wolfe-Burroughs, a descendant of British General Wolfe, the man who successfully routed the French by launching a surprise attack. He offers some surprisingly critical comments upon his ancestor's conquest. The filmmakers then journey to France to speak with the eccentric Le Baron Georges de Marestan, a descendant of the French commander General Montcalm. He offers some rather radical views of the battle and the state of French democracy. Afterward, the interviewers return to Quebec to query historians and watch filmed reenactments of the battles. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

This French Canadian psychological drama begins as homosexual hustler Yves is having sex with his lover Claude. During the climactic moment, he grabs a knife and cuts the throat of his partner and then flees to the streets of Montreal where he pauses only long enough to make a phone call. The killer is captured and is next seen in a judge's chamber undergoing interrogation. He freely admits the crime but refuses to explain why he did it. Nor does he explain why he is in the judge's chamber or why he called the press. Eventually he does explain himself during a long impassioned, self-piteous speech. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
