Columbia kept insisting upon placing its hottest new star Larry Parks in swashbucklers, and though Parks wasn't really suited to the genre, he always strived to please. Set in 17th-century France, the film stars Parks as Lt. David Picard, a peace-loving officer who is nevertheless handy with his sword when the need arises. Hoping to crush the burgeoning pacifistic movement in France, warmongering Marshall Mordore (Victor Jory) plots to abduct popular "people's general" Cadeau (George Macready, in a rare sympathetic role). Picard, Cadeau's adjutant, spends the balance of the film trying to shield the general from harm -- and to romantically pursue beautiful spy Nanton de Lartigues (Marguerite Chapman). The antiwar philosophies of The Gallant Blade would return to haunt Larry Parks when he was called to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Robin Hood (Jon Hall) acosts Sir Allan Claire (Michael Duane) and his sister Lady Marian (Patricia Morison) in Sherwood Forest, only to learn that they are allies of his friend King Richard, who is away fighting in France. He also discovers that Sir Allan was on his way to claim the hand of his betrothed bride, Lady Christabel (Adele Jergens) -- and is forced to tell his new friend that she is, instead, to be married to the nefarious Baron Tristram (avin Muir), all as part of a political maneuver by her father. Robin and Sir Allan vow to prevent the marriage, each for his own reasons, even as the knight's sister -- at first resistant to the bandit's charms -- finds herself falling in love with Robin. But Baron Tristram and his allies aren't so easily thwarted, and the struggle takes heroes and villains alike from the dungeons of Notingham Castle to Robin's stronghold in Sherwood. Among the notable (and, at times, improbable) cast members in this breezy B-movie Robin Hood adventure are Walter Sande as Little John, Alan Mowbray as Friar Tuck, Sid Saylor as Will Scarlet, H. B. Based on an old Gene Stratton Porter story, Keeper of the Bees was a shade too bucolic for postwar audiences. Michael Duane stars as an artist who has lost confidence in humanity. He regains it with the help of a faith healer and her two daughters. One of the girls is played by Gloria Henry, later "Alice Mitchell" on Dennis the Menace. Capitalizing on Larry Parks' "overnight" success in The Jolson Story, Columbia Pictures rushed their hottest new star from one picture to another, whether he was suited to the role or not. In The Swordsman, Parks makes a valiant stab at swashbucklery, playing an 18th-century Scottish aristocrat named Alexander MacArden. The plot revolves around the "forbidden" romance between Alexander and Barbara Glowan (Ellen Drew) of the hated Glowan clan. Managing to effect a truce between the MacArdens and the Glowans, Alexander has his hands full when a couple of hot-headed clansmen starts up the feud all over again. Full-scale warfare explodes between the rival families, but so long as Alexander has his wits about him and a sword in his sheath, the audience can be assured that he'll straighten things out by the ninth reel. Famed dancer-choreographer Marc Platt is uncomfortably cast as a pugnacious member of the Glowan clan, moving one critic to postulate that Columbia must have had a grudge against Platt. The Whistler, mysterious narrator of the radio series of the same name, "knows many things" for he "walks by night." This time the unseen whistler knows all about mentally disturbed artist Richard Dix, whose first wife died under mysterious circumstances. Wife Number Two (Leslie Brooks) begins to suspect that Dix's earlier spouse may have been murdered, and that the artist was the killer. In a tense finale, the second wife uses psychological warfare to turn the tables on the homicidal Dix. This was the sixth in the film in the "Whistler" series produced by Columbia in the mid-1940s. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In this heartwarming children's movie, an adorable child finds a darling donkey and decides to make it his pet, but in order to keep it, he must first housebreak the beast. Even so, the family is not pleased with his pet. Meanwhile, his brother, a recent Army vet, endeavors to make it as a commercial photographer. He gets his break when he snaps a wonderful shot of his brother and the burro and wins a major contest. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Stalwart supporting actor Allyn Joslyn is afforded a rare leading role in the Columbia mystery meller Dangerous Blondes. Joslyn and Evelyn Keyes play Harry and Jane Craig, a road-company Nick and Nora Charles. A popular mystery writer, Harry occasionally indulges in amateur detective work, with wife Jane at his side; their friendly nemesis is Inspector Clinton (Frank Craven), who'd prefer that the Craigs would stay home and mind their own business. This proves impossible when Ralph McCormick (Edmund Lowe), the owner of a swank fashion studio, is accused of murdering his wife for the love of designer Julie Taylor (Anita Louise). Substantially, Lupe Velez' Columbia vehicle Redhead from Manhattan was the same as her previous RKO starrers-boisterous, unsubtle, and immensely profitable. La Lupe plays a dual role, as twin sisters named Rita and Elaine. Escaping from a torpedoed ship, Rita shows up in New York, where she takes the place of her Broadway-star sister Elaine, who's having problems with her marriage and needs to make a short but quick getaway. Naturally, neither Elaine's husband (Gerald Mohr) nor Rita's saxophone-player boyfriend (Michael Duane) are aware of the switch. Anyone who can't figure out what happens next should be drummed out of the theater in disgrace. And as always, a little of Lupe Velez goes a long, long way. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
