The Well-Digger's Daughter served to reunite star Raimu and writer/director Marcel Pagnol, who'd earlier scored an international hit with the "Marseilles trilogy" (Fanny, Marius, Cesar). The title character played by Josette Day, is impregnated by aviator George Gray. Her father, Raimu, orders Josette out of the house so that her younger sisters won't be likewise "corrupted". There's many a moment of pathos and hilarity before Raimu realizes the folly of his behavior. Filmed in 1940, just after France's acquiescence to their Nazi conquerors, The Well-Digger's Daughter didn't make it to the US until 1946. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Popular French comedian Tramel plays a dual role in the hectic comedy Barranco. Actually, Tramel is the same person throughout; he just pretends to be two different people. Arrested for vagrancy, our hero is set free when it is learned that he has inherited a valuable silver mine in Mexico. Though he doubts that he's the genuine heir, Tramel plays the role to the hilt, adopting a pretty daughter and investing his millions in a can't-miss stock deal. When the deal does miss, Tramel is rescued by the timely arrival of his level-headed nephew, who ends up marrying the foster daughter. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Masterful French comic actor Tramel plays the title character in Cognasse. Based on a play, the story zeroes in on Cognasse, a starry-eyed communist workman in a huge French wallpaper factory. On the whim of the new owner Paul Faregot (Andre Roanne), Cognasse is put in charge of the factory. It doesn't take long for our hero's volatile left-leaning sympathies to evaporate when he discovers first-hand the seductive pleasures of capitalism. Once he's made a success of the factory and enriched himself, Cognasse forgets all about waving the Red banner. Cognasse was the final directorial effort by Louis Mercanton, who died shortly after filming was completed. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
