Following Marius and Fanny in Nicholas Ribowski's La Trilogie Marseillaise, Cesar finds Fanny (Gaela Le Devehat) living a comfortable life in middle age, with her son Cesariot (Sebastien Delorme) just entering college. However, when Cesariot learns that his father is really Marius (Eric Poulain), he's shattered and humiliated by this lesson about his heritage. It is left to Cesar (Roger Hanin) to intervene and soothe the boy's feelings as he tries to bring long-separated Fanny and Marius back together.

This melodramatic, clichéd story loosely based on a true, 1983 racially-motivated murder, starts with three men arrested for disorderly conduct at a dance. After they are released, they take a train trip, vent their continuing anger on a young Arab, and kill the man by forcing him out of a window on the speeding train. Their crime is witnessed by Isabelle (Christine Pascal) and reported to the police, enabling commissioner Couturier (Roger Hanin) to find the killers. The major problem now is to prevent a race riot when right-wing extremists falsely accuse some Arabs of reprehensible actions and the townspeople gather to demonstrate at the prison. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Aime Prado (Roger Hanin) is the boisterous manager of a successful restaurant in Marseilles, a man biased against Arabs but otherwise (selectively) good-hearted. One day while out fishing, he is saved from drowning by Julien (Gerard Darmon), a very reserved, even sullen young man whom Aime immediately brings home in gratitude. While Aime's socializing nature slowly begins to overcome Julien's aloof attitude, his daughter Catherine (Magali Renoir) takes an interest in the visitor and soon the two are romantically involved. Aime is fine with that until he finds out that Julien is half-Arab, and what is more, he is an escaped convict who was charged with murder (although he says that the death was accidental). First, his fiancee was kidnapped by a group of woman-sellers, and after a very long and dangerous search through 15th-century France, during which he earns the name of "Skirt Puller Upper," he finally finds his intended. Alas, although he has remained chaste (and not without some difficulty), she has not, and she has also married and given her heart to a nobleman. The all-too innocent lad is heartbroken. Antonin (Fernandel) works on a farm and takes care of the animals in this sentimental comedy. When his boss tells him his favorite old horse has been sold, he takes off with the animal. His goal is to release the horse to run free in the South of France. Antonin runs across a rival who has married a girl he once loved and discovers the woman is scolding, bitchy and evil tempered. The French omnibus feature Tales of Paris is made of four separate romantic playlets, each with its own cast, director, and scenarist. "The Tale of Ella," directed by Jacques Poitrenaud, stars Dany Saval as an ambitious nightclub performer who very nearly messes up her chances for success by bullying a mild-looking but important producer. "The Tale of Antonia," directed by Michel Boisrond, finds housewife Dany Robin exacting a sweet revenge on her cheating husband. "The Tale of Francoise," directed by Claude Barma, concerns the efforts of Francoise Arnoul to test the fidelity of her best friend's lover. And "The Tale of Sophie," directed by Marc Allegret, features Catherine Deneuve as a goody-two-shoes who fabricates a torrid romance in order to be accepted by her sexually knowledgeable schoolmates. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Filmmaker Julien Duvivier returns to the multistoried format of his earlier omnibus films Tales of Manhattan and Flesh and Fantasy with the 1962 French production The Devil and the Ten Commandments. Actually, there are only seven separate episodes in the film, covering such commandments as "Thou Shalt Not Have Any Gods Before Me", "Thou Shalt Not Steal" and "Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother." Each of the vignettes seems to owe more to O. Henry or DeMaupassant than the Book of Exodus, with twist endings carrying the day. The all-star cast includes Michel Simon (Episode One), Dany Saval (Episode Two), Charles Aznavour and Lino Ventura (Episode Three), Micheline Presle, Mel Ferrer and Claude Dauphin (Episode Four); Fernandel (Episode Five); Alain Delon and Danielle Darrieux (Episode Six) and Jean-Claude Brialy (Episode Seven). The story of a Frenchman who fought to liberate the American colonies from British rule is colorfully brought to the screen. Lafayette (Michel Leroyer) is an engaging young landowner who spends his time in taverns drinking and talking politics. When he ends up on the wrong side of the minister's police, he sells his land, buys a ship, and takes off to help the Americans fight the British. He meets up with General Washington (Howard St. John) and earns his rightful place in history as one of the great military leaders.
