Emerenziano (Ugo Tognazzi) is the middle aged tax inspector looking for a rich woman to keep from working and provide him with food and sex. He travels to northern Italy where he is taken in by three maiden sisters of less than average beauty. He marries one sister and takes the other two as mistresses. The virginal sisters are slowly transformed in to man hungry mavens, each possessing their own individual sexual talents. Emerenziano is felled by a stroke when he tries to get the maid to play erotic games. He becomes a helpless prisoner subjected to the whims of the love starved females in this erotic dark comedy. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Joseph Losey's turbulent melodrama concerns a phony writer, Tyvian Jones (Stanley Baker), who has recently sold the film rights to his autobiography as a Welsh coal miner (actually penned by his deceased brother). Tyvian is engaged to Francesca (Virna Lisi), an alluring screenwriter, but then Eva (Jeanne Moreau) walks into his life. Eva and her lover had sought shelter from a thunderstorm in his apartment and Tyvian is immediately attracted to her. He follows her to Rome, where Eva demands an elaborate hotel suite, tons of gambling money, and a bonus for sexual favors. When Tyvian assents in gratifying her wishes, Eva just laughs at him. Tyvian then has to rush back to Francesca, since they are going to be married. But Tyvian forsakes her on their honeymoon and takes up with Eva again. Finding Tyvian and Eva together, Francesca is heartbroken and she commits suicide. After the funeral, Tyvian sets his sights on killing Eva, but, when he sees her, he finds that he is still obsessed with her. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

Vittorio DeSica's follow-up to The Bicycle Thief documents the lives of the poverty-stricken in post-war Italy. Francesco Golisano is Good Toto, an orphan boy who begins living with a cluster of beggars. His organizational efforts bring some structure to the colony and engenders a sense of faint happiness among its morose dwellers. When Toto is given a magic dove by a fairy, he uses its wish-granting powers to whoever asks, but the dove is eventually stolen. As a result, the land on which the beggars live is taken over, and they are jailed. In his prison, however, the dove returns to Toto, and his wish for the freedom of his friends is granted. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Movie Guide

The Italian historical melodrama The Cuckoo Clock was acquired for US distribution by MGM-who promptly shelved the film for several months in reflection of mounting anti-Mussolini sentiments in the US. Vittorio De Sica heads the cast of this complex mystery, in which a huge, American-manufactured cuckoo clock is purchased by a European banker for the express purpose of smuggling gold into England. After agreeing to help the banker in his scheme, an elderly nobleman (secretly a spy) is murdered and his body is stuffed into the clock. The captain of the ship transporting the clock is accused of the killing, but during a spectacular courtroom trial the actual culprit reveals his guilt-and his essentially patriotic motives. Set during the early 19th century, The Cuckoo Clock is lovely to look at but a bit thin dramatically. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Vittorio De Sica, Guglielmo Sinaz, (more)
