Set in post-Spanish Civil War 1947, this tale of spiritual renewal centers on Julia (Lydia Bosch), a writer and bank owner's daughter who becomes deeply depressed following the political incarceration of her boyfriend, painter Jose Miguel. Leaving her family's bourgeois home, Julia travels to the Asturian village of her childhood vacations, where she meets a host of people who invest her with a renewed sense of spirituality. Included among them are the sage Aunt Gala (Julia G. Caba), whose son, a Republican sympathizer, has been forced into hiding; Gala's daughter-in-law Pilara (Ana Fernandez), whose lack of social standing makes her feel awkward around Julia; Juanito (Manuel Lozano), Pilara's young son; schoolteacher Orfeo (Inaki Miramon); and priest Don Matias (Juan Diego). During the course of her time in the village, both Orfeo and Juanito fall for Julia, and their attractions take on an added weight when Julia receives news that Jose Miguel has died in prison. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

Director José Luis Garci has turned his camera inward on filmmakers and screenwriters to portray them as so self-absorbed in the creative process that there is no other world, no other human relationship that can compete. As José (Adolfo Marsillach) and Federico (Jesus Puente) work together on a new screenplay, their interactions with their family (José's teen daughters, Federico's wife) disappear under the all-consuming task of creation. The daughters give up and go off on their own, and the wife joins a convent while Federico barely notices. And when the producer is interrupted by profound grief at the sudden death of his older son, he almost automatically returns to thinking about the film project when the funeral has ended. Garci honors many great directors at the beginning of this film, and the film continues to play out as an elaboration on this homage -- an illustration both of the dedication and the cost of filmmaking, no judgments given. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this suspense thriller, Stephen Boyd plays Miguel, who is clearly not in his right mind. He remembers killing his mother-in-law but cannot determine what happened to his wife Pilar (Marisa Mell). As far as he knows, she may have just run away. As the film opens, it is the servant's day off. Marta (also Marisa Mell), a good-looking young woman who is the spitting image of Miguel's wife, runs the gauntlet of his snarling dogs. He rescues her and puts her to bed in a very fatherly fashion. Later, she tries to seduce him, but he has some sexual dysfunction which causes her efforts to fail. Marta searches the house for Miguel's wife who is her sister. Among other things, she finds a room fitted out for torture but otherwise has no success. Later, she induces Miguel to join her in the search. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This is an English-dubbed version of the Spanish and Italian-made 1967crime action feature, also released with the name The Narco Men. It stars Tom Tryon, who shortly after this period left acting completely and went on to become a quite successful novelist. Harry Bell (Tryon) is an Interpol agent who has been framed and sent to prison. On his release, he finds work with a gangster who is desperate to recover some stolen heroin. Right-wing U.S. Treasury Department agents try to stop the delivery of opium from China in this uneven, implausible story. Agent Kelly (Dana Andrews) declares that all opium plants are grown in China and that this drug supply is "a time bomb from Peking to destroy the moral fiber of our nation." Mike Rand (Peter Martell) is a young gun in the department who gleefully declares himself "judge, jury and executioner" as he pumps a round of bullets into the heart of an unarmed man. This Latin western comedy chronicles the epic saga of the MacGregors, a Scottish clan of ranchers living on the Mexican border, who are in conflict with the local crooked sheriff, the local horse salesman, and a gang of banditos. The trouble begins when the horse trader tries to bilk them on a deal. The brothers begin brawling and are tossed in jail. They are eventually released and discover that the outlaws have taken their horses and find out the sheriff is in league with the rogues and will not help. After being falsely accused of cattle rustling and murder, rancher Brent Landers (played here by Giuliano Gemma) follows the trail of the man who set him up. Landers happens upon the young Lucy (Evelyn Stewart), stripped naked, tied spread eagle to the ground, and left to bake in the hot desert sun after being sexually assaulted by three men who robbed her stagecoach. Tex Slaughter, the local sheriff, is more interested in handing Brent over for the reward on his head, so Landers has his hands full protecting the recuperating Lucy and bringing the men who raped her to justice, while also trying to stay alive long enough to clear his own name. ~ Cub Koda, All Movie Guide
