In this fast-moving children's picture, a kindergarten is closed down suddenly because of a contagious illness and the parents of little 5-year-old Masha are in desperate straits -- where do they leave her while they go off to work? The mother is a research scientist and the father works in a museum -- they do not have the option of staying home and caring for their daughter, and neither do they have an extended family -- at least, not one that can extend over a long period of child care. And so the bright and enterprising Masha is about to have the various experiences of her young life as she is left with everyone from relatives, to her parents' co-workers, friends, and even casual acquaintances. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Director Madeshda Koschewerowa whose first film was released in 1929 and who is best known for a 1947 production of Cinderella, is still in fine form in this mid-'80s version of a story by Charles Perrault. (Another, French version of the same story directed by Jacques Demy was released in 1970.) With great sets and costuming, the tale is about star-crossed lovers, an evil stepmother, and a magical donkey. Princess Theresa is set to marry the young Prince Jacques -- but her stepmother has other plans. Preying on the king's own weakness, the stepmother exacts a promise he feels bound to keep -- but that promise is anathema to the princess. Even though her fairy godmother and the magic donkey come to her aid, it is not enough. So she flees the castle and discards her royal trappings to become a beggar -- yet Prince Jacques still loves her and sets out to marry her, no matter what.

Katya (Tanya Aksyuta) and Roman (Nikita Mikhailovsky) are two teenagers who fall in love in spite of the opposition of one of their parents. Katya's mother (Irina Miroshnichenko) and Roman's father (Albert Filozov) had known each other in a most friendly way many years earlier - and now they are going to be neighbors. Roman's mother (Lidiya Fedoseyeva-Shukshina) does not like the idea of a possible old flame suddenly being rekindled, and she does everything she can to keep Katya and Roman apart, in order to lessen any reason for contact between the two families. A schoolteacher enters into the picture, making the odds a little better for Katya and Roman who are determined to overcome his mother's opposition to their relationship. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

It is 1927, and a former noblewoman's son-in-law (Anatoli Papanov) hears from her deathbed that during the revolution, ten years ago, she hid the family jewels in one of a set of 12 chairs. He teams up with charming con man Ostap Bender (Andrei Mironov) to find all 12. Also chasing after the chairs is a renegade Orthodox priest (Rolan Bykov). This film, told in a sly, slapstick style, holds many surprises as it recounts their desperate efforts to find the jeweled chair of the set, which has been scattered to the four winds. The story is based on the satirical Russian novel The Twelve Chairs, which offered a keen, humorous depiction of certain Soviet types during the so-called NEP (New Economic Policy) that allowed certain entrepreneurial activities to take place. This novel has been the subject for many adaptations including one by Mel Brooks. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
