She claims that because she refused the marriage arrangements made by the island's high priest that she is tabu, off limits to all men. A passionate affair sends a married engineer on a deadly roller coaster ride of death and vengeance in this grim horror outing. The trouble begins after he moves to Spain where he will oversee the construction of his invention: a generator shaped like a ferris wheel. He is busy looking for a place to house his wife and daughter when he sees a desperate young woman trying to burn down her home for the insurance money she so badly needs. He stops the woman and they become passionate lovers. The affair is so hot that the engineer fears it will consume him and so he hastily extinguishes it. The jilted mistress flares up into a jealous rage and gets revenge by immolating the engineer's wife and child. Also released as Valley of the Swords, this lugubrious US/Spanish co-production features the usual mid-1960s "tax shelter" international cast. Broderick Crawford plays a despotic 10th century Spanish king who, in cahoots with the invading Moors, has banished handsome Castilian nobleman Spartaco Santoni. With the surreptitious aid of Crawford's daughter Teresa Velasquez, Santoni assembles an army to march against the Moors. In keeping with the 13th century epic poem from which this film was derived ("El Poema de Fernan Gonzales") Santoni's path is smoothed by the celestial intervention of patron saints Milan and Santiago. Among the big names picking up a few tax-free dollars in The Castilian are Cesar Romero, Linda Darnell, Alida Valli and Fernando Rey. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
One major film star referred to director Nicholas Ray as a "loser," because of Ray's alleged willingness to let his more temperamental actors walk all over him. Evidently, Ray had a very compliant and cooperative cast in King of Kings, inasmuch as the film emerged as one of the most disciplined Biblical epics ever made. Jeffrey Hunter is cast as Jesus Christ, delivering a wholly credible performance in this most taxing of roles (never mind the wags who referred to the film as "I Was a Teenage Jesus"). Siobhan McKenna is a radiant if somewhat overaged Mary; Hurd Hatfield offers a properly preening Pontius Pilate; Rip Torn portrays Judas more for the tragedy than the treachery; Robert Ryan (a personal favorite of Ray's) is one of the best John the Baptists you're ever likely to see; and Harry Guardino convincingly interprets Barabbas as a firebrand political extremist. The only false note in the casting is the MGM-dictated selection of teenaged Brigid Bazlen as Salome. The best aspect of the film is its handling of the days after the Resurrection; the "Jesus sightings" are offered as secondhand information, so as to retain some of the mystery inherent in the Scriptures. King of Kings was previously filmed in 1927 by Cecil B. DeMille, with a middle-aged H.B. Warner as Jesus. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Seldom was the identity of a "mystery" villain so obvious than in the 15-chapter Columbia serial Overland With Kit Carson. Bill Elliot plays the title character, who teams with cavalry lieutenant Brent (Richard Fiske) to rid the West of the mysterious megalomaniac known only as "Pegleg." While on the job, Carson falls in love with Spanish aristocrat Carmelita (Iris Meredith), who like the rest of the cast is heading Westward by wagon train. As the expedition moves ever forward, the elusive Pegleg does his best to sabotage the wagons and kill off anyone who tumbles to his true identity. He needn't have gone to all that trouble: it won't be hard for the viewer to guess who the villain really is once the cast list of Overland with Kit Carson is flashed upon the screen. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
