Previously filmed in 1916 with Mary Pickford's brother Jack in the lead, Booth Tarkington's irresistable coming-of-age novel Seventeen serves as a tailor-made vehicle for 18-year-old Jackie Cooper. The star is cast as William Slyvanus Baxter, a high school boy who is undergoing the pangs of First Romance. The object of his affections is flirtatious debutante Lola Pratt (Betty Field), an "older woman"-at least a whole year older! Losing his head completely, William spends all of his hard-earned money on the fickle Lola, only to learn a valuable (and very expensive) lesson about loving neither wisely nor too well. Norma Nelson is hilariously hateful as William's tattletale kid sister, while Otto Kruger and Ann Shoemaker are quietly effective as the boy's exasperated but understanding parents. Obviously rushed into production to capitalize on the successful teaming of Jackie Cooper and Betty Field in 1939's What a Life!, Seventeen is an excellent effort in its own right. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

All Women Have Secrets affords a rare film starring role for James Cagney's talented sister Jeanne Cagney. Set on a college campus, the story concerns the trials and tribulations of married student John (Joseph Allen) and his pregnant wife Kay (Cagney). In addition to their existing financial woes, Kay faces dismissal from her nightclub singing job as her waistline expands. The "secret" refers to the fact that Kay has been withholding the fact that John is about to become a father , lest he offer to quit school to support them both. Range War was the 22nd entry in the durable "Hopalong Cassidy" western series. William Boyd and Russell Hayden return as Hoppy and Lucky, while Britt Wood handles the comic-sidekick duties normally assigned to Gabby Hayes. In this outing, land baron Buck Collins (Willard Robertson) receives advance word that the railroad plans to build in the territory. Realizing that the laying of rails will cut him out of the heavy tolls he's been charging those who ride through his spread, Collins begins cooking up methods to sabotage the railroad. But with Hoppy and Lucky slapping leather on behalf of the good guys, Collins is doomed from the start. Like most of the "Cassidy" entries of the 1930s, Range War is exceptionally well cast, with silent film star Matt Moore as railroad magnate Jim Marlow and Pedro de Cordoba as saintly Padre Jose, among many others. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
