John-Luke Montias makes a triple-threat debut as writer, director and star of the tense urban drama Bobby G. Can't Swim. Bobby Grace (John-Luke Montias) is a small-time drug dealer who is just trying to keep himself above water, selling cocaine to a collection of losers and ne'er-do-wells in New York's Hell's Kitchen. Despite the pathetic circumstances of his life, Bobby and his pals -- girlfriend Lucy (Susan Mitchell), who makes her living as a hooker; Popeet (Norman Middleton), a blind man who has a knack for finding salable objects, and Coco (Vincent Vega), Bobby's supplier -- are convinced that somehow their lives will get better. One day, Bobby's ship would seem to have finally come it; he meets an upscale customer who wants to buy an entire kilo of coke. The deal should earn Bobby a payday big enough to allow him to get out of dealing, but the customer demands product before payment, and when the payment doesn't arrive, Bobby's gravy train turns into an anchor threatening to take him to the bottom of the ocean. Director Abel Ferrara applies his eccentric vision to the vampire genre with this cerebral "Art" film about graduate philosophy student Kathleen Conklin (Lili Taylor), who is bitten by an aggressive female vampire (Annabella Sciorra) and soon spirals into a nightmarish world of blood addiction and existential angst. Driven by her merciless condition, she attacks several of her pretentious friends and classmates (even her professor) and mainlines their blood like heroin. Just as she becomes more bold in seeking prey on the streets of New York, she is waylaid by a potential victim -- actually a sophisticated vampire himself named Peina (Christopher Walken), who chooses to control his own blood addiction through fasting and meditation. Seeming to regain her self-control, she eventually completes her graduate thesis (helped by a bit of vampire nepotism) and holds a party to celebrate, inviting the entire faculty as well as members of her new "family" to join in the festivities. Although the parallels to heroin addiction are in plain view, this is also a study in the essential evil of humankind -- a theme evident in much of Ferrara's work. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

In one of the last breakdancing movies of the mid-'80s, two competing breakdancing teams have their eye on a $10,000 prize in an upcoming contest. Three of the dancers on one team work as pizza delivery boys. Mean-spirited Spider (Mario van Peebles) from the opposing team convinces the gullible pizza boss that the three must be detained so they can't enter the contest. So one of the three is set up to make a delivery to a gorgeous woman who seduces him. The second is sent to a hospital where he's given new medicine that sidelines him for the rest of the day. And the third is sent to a gallery where he breaks a statue in an exhibition opening that evening and is forced to pose as the broken image, wearing only a fig leaf. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
