As part of the Ottoman Empire, sections of Yugoslavia were under Islamic Turkish rule until as late as the 19th century. Among the different flavors of belief practiced in Islam is a mystical variety known as Sufism, which has an offshoot group of followers known as Dervishes. Since people in the Balkans inherit their religious affiliations along with their names, in time the term "Dervish" came to indicate a person's clan allegiance as much as a group's religious beliefs. In this story, an honest and thoughtful young Dervish is appalled when his brother is tortured and killed by Muslim authorities. When a change in government in Istanbul leads the young Dervish to replace his brother's murderers in authority, he hopes to change the government's oppressive ways in his region but confronts complex politics and bureaucratic inertia. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Frontier Hellcat was the fourth in a series of 1960s European westerns based on Karl May's "Winnetou" character. Stewart Granger takes over from Lex Barker in the leading "Anglo"-role of the mysterious maverick who wanders from town to town doing the "Lone Ranger" bit. The hellcat of the title is Elke Sommer, a tempestuous frontierswoman who reluctantly accepts Granger's help in attaining safe passage through the Rocky Mountains ("played" in this film by the Alps). The original title of Frontier Hellcat was Unter Geiern; the production was a cooperative effort, with contributions from West Germany, France, Italy, and Yugoslavia. Stewart Granger would star in the "Winnetou" saga again in Rampage at Apache Wells and ld Surehand. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

An interesting drama by Yugoslavian director Jovan Zivanovic about a young woman with internal conflicts, this is one of the few Eastern bloc films of this era without a covert or overt political message. Minja (Spela Rozin) leaves her provincial town suffering from some trauma caused by an older man. As she is on her way to studying in a big university she runs into a journalist and though she is angry, embittered, and temporarily without grounding, she has a one-night-stand. Her morals take a downward turn after arriving in the city and for awhile, it looks as though there is little hope of her recovering from her past wounds. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
