In what was billed as "The First East-Meets-West Western," Toshiro Mifune plays Kuroda, a samurai warrior who accompanies a Japanese diplomat to the United States. The diplomat has brought with him a golden, jewel-encrusted sword to present as a token of good will to the president, but as they travel by train through the west, they're ambushed by a pair of outlaws, Gauche (Alain Delon) and Link (Charles Bronson). Gauche and Link steal the sword, but Link leans the hard way about his partner's trustworthiness when Gauche double-crosses him and makes off with the booty. Since both Kuroda and Link have a grudge against Gauche, they warily join forces to track him down and return the sword to its rightful owner. Along the way, they have to deal with cultural conflict, Indian attacks, and encounters with beautiful women (played by Capucine and Ursula Andress). Given its cast and theme, Red Sun was predictably enough a major box-office success in Europe and Japan, but it passed through with little notice in the United States. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Genre specialist Mario Bava takes a rare trip out to the plains in this rousing comedy-Western that turns the work of iconic spaghetti Western specialist Sergio Leone on its head. When Roy Colt (Brett Halsey) and Winchester Jack (Charles Southwood) fail to make a living at living dishonestly, Roy resolves to dissolve the partnership and earn an honest dollar in Carson City. Unexpectedly greeted upon arrival at Carson City with a badge and a gun, newfound sheriff Roy gets that old familiar feeling when the nervous citizens entrust him with a replica of a stolen treasure map that is said to lead to a bounty of buried gold. Unfortunately for Roy, the mysterious Reverend Teodoro Corra, a dynamite-toting Russian outlaw; his old partner Jack; a Jewish desperado named Berenstein (Mauro Bosco); and a wanted Native American seductress (Marilù Tolo) are also gunning for the gold. The English-language title and the Anglo-Saxon name of the director (Alex Burks) of this film would tend to lead one to surmise that A Long Ride From Hell is a Hollywood western. But wait! That terrain looks awfully Italian, and it so happens that Alex Burks is really Camillo Bazzoni. You'll probably catch onto the film's country of origin the moment Steve "Hercules" Reeves rides into view; Reeves (who co-wrote the screenplay) plays a rancher framed on a train-robbery charge. "Long" and "Hell" are the operative words here. Originally titled Vivo per la Tua Morte, this sleep-inducer was Steve Reeves' cinematic swan song. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

He is pressed into service to prevent a gang of international terrorists from taking over the world.
