Impulse, is a tawdry, low-budget exploitation film about a maniacal murderer possessed by evil demons. Matt Stone (William Shatner) is a paranoid, con-man and gigolo who seduces lonely women and then bilks them of their savings using an investment scam. Then he kills them. When he begins seeing an attractive widow, her daughter Tina (Kim Nicholas) becomes suspicious of his motives. Then Tina herself is in danger. Impulse, directed by William Grefe, is the absolute nadir of Shatner's acting career and consequently has become a camp, cult classic and a must see for fans of Shatner. Comedian Jackie Mason made one of his many comeback attempts after the 1966 Ed Sullivan Show "flipping the finger" debacle with the low-budget The Stoolie. Mason plays a cheap crook who cops a plea with the law by offering to trap other thieves with bait money. But Mason can't leave well enough alone; he steals $7500 of the money himself and high-tails it to Miami Beach. Now he must continually look over his shoulder as both the police and the crooks try to catch up with him. Seedily effective at times (though not during the love scenes between Mason and leading lady Marcia Jean Kurtz), The Stoolie was produced in Florida and New Jersey by Jackie Mason himself; it received very limited release in 1972, then was given a second unsuccessful distribution in 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

John D. McDonald was not altogether pleased with what Hollywood did to his novel Darker Than Amber, but audiences were generally satisfied. Private eye Travis McGee (Rod Taylor) and his cohort Meyer (Theodore Bikel) rescue the beautiful Vangie (Suzy Kendall) from drowning. Vangie has been targetted for death by a couple of disreputable types who, as it turns out, were her former partners in crime. When Vangie is murdered, McGee hires a lookalike (also played by Suzy Kendall) to corner the killers. As is usually the case in the ouevre of John D. McDonald, nothing is quite what it appears to be on surface. Jane Russell, reemerging from one of her period retirements, is fun to watch as "Alabama Tiger". Current prints of the R-rated Darker Than Amber have been modified to qualify for a "PG." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
