Gerard Barbier (Michel Coluche) has taken on a temporary job at a small elementary school and soon finds himself involved in sticky situations that challenge his inventiveness. In one such instance, a suicidal fellow-teacher has to be rushed to the hospital and the only available vehicle is an oversized tractor trailer, hardly the ticket for charging down the road. This is the first of four planned films for French comedic star Coluche, working under director Claude Berri. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This lighthearted French film affectionately follows two teenage boys living in a boarding school in a provincial town. At the boarding school, they horse around, playing pranks, roughhousing with each other and climbing over the school's walls to harass and tease the local girls. Their main interest in life is women; anything whatever to do with them is pleasing to them. They scrape together the money for a trip to Sweden, and despite more difficulties than they anticipated, one of them succeeds in making love with a girl. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In this French film, Jeanne (Simone Signoret) is a poorly regarded (and treated) second wife, who serves as more of a servant to her new family than as anyone important. This movie screens both her Thurber-esque fantasies of gaining status and revenge, and her actual activities, which generally do little to improve her situation. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Les Camisards brings events to the screen from the period in French history in which King Louis XIV ordered all Protestants to convert to Catholicism. The film begins just after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1598-1685), a proclamation that had granted official toleration to Protestants. Rather than being a sweeping epic, this film examines the fight of a small group of Protestants for survival in the mountainous Cevennes region. Some of the story is told using excerpts from the diary kept by an actual participant in the conflict. This movie is notable for its period authenticity and historical accuracy; it does not try to make the story into an analogy for modern issues, and the characters' concerns are correct for their time. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Louis Malle directed this light comedy about crime and class in the City of Light. Georges Randal (Jean-Paul Belmondo) is a young man living in Paris at the turn of the century who is due to inherit a considerable fortune. However, his uncle, who is acting as his guardian, manages to spend Georges' money before he ever gets a chance to see it. Georges is also deeply in love with Charlotte (Geneviève Bujold), his cousin, and wants to marry her; however, the same uncle has promised her hand to another, a man Charlotte does not love. Understandably angry, Georges makes plans to steal the family's jewelry, intended for Charlotte, away from his dishonest uncle. Georges soon discovers that he enjoys being a thief, and begins robbing the wealthy as protest against the bourgeoisie. However, as Georges' ill-gotten nest egg grows, he finds himself becoming a member of the idle rich he professes to despise. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
