In this crime drama, a playboy gambler has a passionate one-night stand with a beautiful woman. During the night, he briefly leaves and when he returns, finds her dead. Not wanting his name in the papers, the man tries to avoid the police. He soon finds himself victimized by extortionists, headed by his own boss and the girl, who only feigned death. In the second episode of the four-part story "The War Machines," the Doctor (William Hartnell) discovers that the supercomputer WOTAN (Will Operating Thought Analogue) has exercised mind control over thousands of hapless Londoners. The hypnotized humans have been put to work building an army of robots and tanks so that WOTAN can conquer the earth. Meanwhile, the Doctor's companion, Dodo, is in dire jeopardy again (and without giving the game away, it should be noted that this was Jackie Lane's final series appearance). Based on a novel by Laurence Meynell, this film tells of a young businessman from England who who gets involved in a scheme to inundate a small communist country in the Middle East with counterfeit money.
