I Was an American Spy is a true story, based on a series of autobiographical Reader's Digest articles written by Claire Phillips. Ann Dvorak stars as Ms. Phillips, an American nightclub singer trapped in Singapore when the Japanese march in. Having lost her husband to the Bataan death march, Phillips agrees to join an American secret agent (Gene Evans) in undermining the Japanese occupation troops. She is captured by the enemy, tortured, and sentenced to be shot, but is rescued at the last minute by her American contact. I Was an American Spy handles its more brutal scenes with a marked degree of tastefulness, thanks to the careful direction of Lesley Selander. Just as in their wartime movie appearances, Chinese actor Richard Loo and Korean actor Philip Ahn are eminently hissable as the Japanese villains. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Even after three appearances as oriental sleuth Charlie Chan, Roland Winters showed no interest in taking the role seriously. Shanghai Chest finds Charlie in the employ of the U.S. government, assigned to solve a series of puzzling murders. The victims all appear to have died by snakebite, which would have been impossible under the circumstances. Further confusing the issue is the fact that all fingerprints at the scenes of the crime have been left by a man who's supposed to be dead. Even with the dubious assistance of son Tommy (Victor Sen Yung) and chauffeur Birmingham Brown (Mantan Moreland), the clever Mr. Chan cracks the case. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Returning to Singapore after a five-year absence, WWII veteran Matt Gordon (Fred MacMurray) mournfully recalls his romance with, and marriage to, a girl named Linda (Ava Gardner), whom he assumes was killed in a bombing raid on their wedding night. Resuming his prewar profession as a pearl smuggler, Matt gets mixed up with gangsters who are seeking a cache of pearls that he hid somewhere in Singapore during the war. He also meets wealthy Michael Van Leyden (Roland Culver), who is married to a woman who closely resembles the lamented Linda. In point of fact, she is Linda, but has been suffering from amnesia ever since the wartime bombing. Upon being reunited with his lost love, Matt does his best to ditch his unsavory companions and to rescue Linda from her "new" life. Clearly inspired by Casablanca, Singapore was remade as the 1957 Errol Flynn vehicle Istanbul. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Roland Winters takes over the role of wily oriental sleuth Charlie Chan in the so-so Monogram programmer The Chinese Ring. The film is a remake of 1939's Mr. Wong in Chinatown, right down to dialogue and camera angles. Charlie Chan gets dragged into the story when a beautiful Chinese princess (Jean Wong) drops dead in his living room. Chan's only clue to the murderer and his motives is the letter "K," leading him to such likely suspects as Captains Kelso (Thayer Roberts) and Kong (Philip Ahn). Aiding and abetting Chan at every turn are his erstwhile "assistants," son Tommy (Victor Sen Yung) and chauffeur Birmingham Brown (Mantan Moreland), not to mention loud-mouthed police sergeant Davidson (Warren Douglas) and perky gal reporter Peggy Cartwright (Louise Currie). The fact that Roland Winters refuses to take his role seriously greatly enhances the film's enjoyment. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
