Director Aleksandar Rajkovic takes his cue from the Yugoslavian "Black Wave" movement of the 1960s for this adaptation of the William Shakespeare classic set in a 21st century Belgrade garbage dump. The buildings that Shakespeare described as castles are now ramshackle slum houses, and gangs of Orthodox Roma have entered into a heated confrontation with local Muslims over the distribution of the trash that occupies the massive landfill. Winter has fallen on Serbia, and in the wake of his brother's death, Jova weds his late sibling's wife, Yelena, and assumes leadership of the gang who runs the trade on the garbage dump. As the specter of Yelena's late husband haunts the dump in search of revenge, his young son, Hamlet, discovers that his uncle orchestrated the murder of his father -- a revelation that sets the stage for tragedy and seals the grim fate of all involved. Shot with a cast of Roma actors -- many of whom had no prior acting or film experience -- Rajkovic's innovative take on Shakespeare's timeless play proves once again that the Bard's work can still ring true even when removed from its original time and setting. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Filmmaker Goran Paskaljevic spins five tales of life in post-millennium Serbia in this provocative omnibus combining elements of comedy and drama. First, a hypnotist arrives in a small village that has been leveled by floods. The mesmerist offers his services to the community, but the residents are suspicious of his motives. Next, a woman is sexually assaulted by the man who owns the firm where she works. Her father is also employed by the same man, but when he seeks revenge, he realizes how powerless he is in this situation. In episode three, a young man loses the money earmarked for his father's funeral in a gambling spree. Desperate to win it back, he turns to an elderly woman who has been enjoying remarkable luck at the slot machines. Part four concerns a doctor who is called to examine the son of a man who operates a slaughterhouse. The boy has developed a dangerous enthusiasm for bloodshed, but the doctor doesn't realize the full ramifications of the boy's attitude until he escapes his family's home. And finally, a confidence man promising new health to a group of ailing and elderly people leaves them stranded in the middle of nowhere en route to taking the cure. By the end of this whimsical little film, we learn that its hero, a Russian army officer, is afraid that others will learn just how good the food is in Berlin's city prison, and crowd him out of his place there. It is just after the reunification of East and West Germany, and Victor Borisovic (Svetozar Cvetkovic), along with the rest of his unit, is expecting orders any day now to return to Russia. Instead, every one of his men leaves; where they went, no one knows. The government hasn't been sending paychecks to the men for some time now, and even if they did, the ruble is worth almost nothing against the mark. Victor has no men to boss around, no money, and no food. So it is not too surprising to see him wandering around the city in his fine uniform, stealing food from the zoo's animals, and making the acquaintance of all sorts of people living on the edge. Really, being abandoned in Berlin is probably the best thing that has ever happened to him. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Charuga (Ivo Gregurevic) is a wild, scruple-free character, who goes off to fight in Russia during the first World War, and becomes even less easily swayed by ordinary concerns. As the movie opens, he is being chased throught the woods, naked, by the Slovenian police. He has just made love to his old sweetheart and killed the man who had been bedding her since the war began. Then he teams up with a communist guerilla to enjoy even more mayhem and murder. Meanwhile, he is being tracked down by a plodding but persistent policeman. The policeman has aspirations of having sex with an Austrian noblewoman; ironically, Charuga has been having sloppy sex with her for some time. Eventually, after a great many journeys and adventures, this scoundrel is captured. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In this political drama, the manager of a Montenegran factory gets in the way of the schemes of a dishonest bunch of power brokers who get him arrested on phony charges of corruption. No one has the courage to come to his defense except for one factory supervisor, who consequently suffers for his good deed by being fired after several demotions. Eventually the government steps in and straighten things out, but the need for everyone to save face prompts the factory boss to pretend that the manager's absence was simply due to his need to be away on business. However, this dishonesty won't wash with the boss' defender, and he continues to suffer reprisals for his refusal to play the game even minimally. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Both the premise and the storyline falter and ultimately fizzle in this rural drama by Zivko Nikolic. A distinctive fishing village on a picturesque lake is inhabited by hard-working women who support their male counterparts because the latter are too busy to work -- they have to hang out in the local pub, flirt with the waitresses there, and dream of going to America where they must assume they will be paid for their current behavior. At any rate, one young man realizes that the modern era is upon them, and he gets the idea that they should connect their beautiful lake to the ocean by drilling a tunnel through the intervening mountain range. The result would empty the lake and give them rich soil for producing abundant crops. When a blond American bombshell, a second-generation Yugoslavian, arrives from the U.S. to work in the pub, the young man enlists her aid in his dream project. But the men are too overwhelmed by testosterone to think clearly, and soon the village is rift by a blood feud, presaging the tragic decomposition that would tear apart the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. For anyone unfamiliar with the history of and divisions in Yugoslav society, parts of this film may zoom right past, uncaptured. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
