Banned for over a decade because of its "explicit" sexual situations, when this film was released in Yugoslavia in 1983 the "explicit" scenes had become tame. Other than the notoriety it obtained through censorship, the film has an undistinguished story about the forbidden love affair between the older wife of a sports director and a young athlete. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Frontier Hellcat was the fourth in a series of 1960s European westerns based on Karl May's "Winnetou" character. Stewart Granger takes over from Lex Barker in the leading "Anglo"-role of the mysterious maverick who wanders from town to town doing the "Lone Ranger" bit. The hellcat of the title is Elke Sommer, a tempestuous frontierswoman who reluctantly accepts Granger's help in attaining safe passage through the Rocky Mountains ("played" in this film by the Alps). The original title of Frontier Hellcat was Unter Geiern; the production was a cooperative effort, with contributions from West Germany, France, Italy, and Yugoslavia. Stewart Granger would star in the "Winnetou" saga again in Rampage at Apache Wells and ld Surehand. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

An engaging journey into the psyche of its main protagonists, this first feature-length film by Yugoslav director Bostjan Hladnik combines symbolism with surreal and expressionist passages to create an evocative drama. At the center of attention is the relationship between the husband and wife in a marriage that has not been happy for awhile. The husband is an artist trying to make a living on his art and the wife is an introspective young actress. He has come to take his wife for granted and as a consequence, is bored with life at home. She knows this and when the chance to have an affair comes her way, she seriously vacillates until finally she decides she has to remain faithful. But the toll of living with a man who does not seem to love her anymore is very great, and even her daydreams cannot assuage her increasing depression. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
