No Regrets opens as architect Alex Wheeler (Robert Merrill) is reunited with his college sweetheart Suzanne (Lari White) at the same time that Alex's wife, Cheryl (Janine Turner), is reunited with her college love Phil. But wait a minute! That isn't the real Cheryl, nor the real Suzanne, nor the real Phil. The real Alex (Edward Albert) is a movie director, trying to work out his personal and romantic problems by making a movie about his situation, with actors portraying the people in his life. As the "love story with two happy endings" progresses, reality and fantasy alternately merge and intersect with breathless rapidity -- and few are more confused by the piling on of fact and fiction than Alex's real-life wife Cheryl (Jennifer Hetrick), and actual mistress, Suzanne (Kate Jackson). Adapted from a series of novels by science fiction icon Philip Jose Farmer, the made-for-cable Riverworld is set on a distant planet where famous historical characters are reincarnated in a young, attractive,and healthy form. After his death in a space accident, Earth astronaut Hale (Brad Johnson) is reborn on Riverworld, where, much to his amazement, he rubs shoulders with dozens of past celebrities, from Mark Twain to the Emperor Nero. Hale is told that anyone who has ever lived on Earth at any time in history is qualified to start life anew on Riverworld -- even if that person is a space alien who just happened to be Earthbound at the time of his demise. But before he can jump to the conclusion that Riverworld is the intergalactic version of Heaven, Hale quickly learns that all is not well in this faraway land. Greed, mistrust, and tribal warfare are the principal "industries" in Riverworld, with many of Earth's past villains (Nero, in particular) hoping to exploit their new lives in order to resume their wicked ways. Moreover, the residents are constantly monitored by a tribe of sinister, hooded figures who occasionally intervene in the action whenever they feel that things are getting out of control -- their control. Organizing a rebellion, Hale leads several other reincarnated souls on an arduous journey along the river that girdles the planet, hoping to learn the secret of Riverworld and convert its hellish aspects into something resembling paradise. Tom Selleck plays the drifter Rafe Covington in this respectful adaptation of the Louis L'Amour novel Crossfire Trail, presented by Turner Network Television. A romantic Western, Crossfire Trail follows Rafe as he struggles to honor his vow to a dying friend to protect his wife and daughter and their Wyoming homestead. Virginia Madsen plays the widow who questions Rafe's intentions and unwittingly sides with the bad guys headed by land owner Bruce Barkow (Mark Harmon). The producers went to great lengths to find historic buildings and props to lend an authentic air to the production. The film was directed by Simon Wincer, who also paired with Selleck on 1990's Quigley Down Under. Thus, once his sight is restored, Jack finds himself in the crosshairs of two potential assassins -- the demented Bedelia, and the brother of the crook he killed. Educated and with a promising career, Miranda (Sigal Erez) finds her life in Mexico shattered by corrupt officials, causing her to take flight across the Rio Grande into Texas with other illegal immigrants. With no possessions or money, Miranda finds herself in the desert separated from her protective brothers. The opportunity arises to hide in the Winnebago of a pair of American tourists, but the tourists are witness to a horrific crime: A drug deal has gone wrong and a half-dozen mobsters are slaughtered by corrupt U.S. Border Guard patrolmen. With a policy of not permitting any witnesses to escape, the renegade patrolmen then kill the tourists at point blank and with the hidden Miranda as a witness. Eventually Miranda finds a job as a waitress in a diner where she befriends the local sheriff, Grant (Brad Johnson); when Grant learns what Miranda has seen, he becomes his key witness' protector -- and, eventually, her lover -- as the ruthless patrolmen close in for the kill. The will-o'-the-wisp black sheep of a North Carolina farming family, Frannie Vaughan (Farrah Fawcett) reacts to the news that her mother has only six months to live in her usual quirky fashion -- she dashes off to parts unknown, intending to return home in exactly six months so that she may be at her mother's bedside "when the time comes." Imagine her embarrassment when, upon coming back to the farm, Frannie learns that her mother's demise occurred three days before schedule,in fact, she is even late for the funeral. When she finds out her embittered sister, Natalie (Ashley Crow), intends to sell the farm, Frannie tries to make up for past misdeeds by earning enough money (200,000 dollars to be exact) to keep the property in the family. That is why the heroine ends up packing underwear in the local silk mill owned by a handsome and unattached chap named Ruben (Brad Johnson). The real-life story of Teddy Roosevelt's role in the Spanish-American war is re-told in this made-for-television movie. Tom Berenger stars as Roosevelt, who in 1898 formed his own volunteer calvary to go into Cuba and fight the expansion of Spanish rule. Thousands of men from all walks of life volunteered, but Roosevelt honed the team down to over 500 fighting men. When they finally arrived in Cuba, they faced a well-equipped Spanish army and squared off in the famous Battle of San Juan Hill. Berenger is strong as the charismatic leader, and the supporting cast shines with familiar names. In this made-for-TV drama, Donna Yaklich is visited by her son in the correctional facility where she will spend many years. There she explains the terrible circumstances of her incarceration. Her trouble began when she fell in love with Dennis, an upstanding and seemingly stable police officer. Unfortunately, she discovers that Dennis, an obsessive weight-lifter is regularly taking large doses of steroids. These drugs not only bulk up his muscles, they also make him dangerously aggressive and verbally abusive. Afraid for herself and her children, Donna tries to leave Dennis, but he refuses to let go. Produced for cable TV, this feeble follow-up to the classic Hitchcock thriller transfers the avian carnage from Bodega Bay to the New England fishing town of Land's End, where a young couple and their two daughters are besieged by squadrons of malicious gulls and their assorted winged cousins. Despite some opening scenes suggesting an actual motivation for the bird attacks -- something Hitchcock left eerily ambiguous -- there is little variation on the formula, which overstays its welcome long before the lackluster climax (which owes more to The Killer Shrews than to The Birds); the pointless proceedings are further bogged down by a dreary adultery subplot. Even the presence of Tippi Hedren fails to provide even a slightly clever nod to the original, as she is wasted in a minor role as the proprietor of a local diner who has her own theories about the cause of the bird attacks. Direction was credited to standard DGA pseudonym Alan Smithee when Rick Rosenthal withdrew his name from the final cut. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

For all its state-of-the-art special effects, Always is essentially a remake of the 1943 Spencer Tracy-Irene Dunne fantasy vehicle A Guy Named Joe--minus the wartime context. Richard Dreyfuss stars as a reckless fire-fighting pilot who is killed in what was to have been his final mission. Ascending to Heaven, Dreyfuss is introduced to businesslike angel Audrey Hepburn (playing the equivalent of the Lionel Barrymore role in A Guy Named Joe). Hepburn instructs the spectral Dreyfuss to pass on his aviation knowhow to his young successor, Brad Johnson. Our ghostly hero also smoothes the course of romance for his earthly girl friend Holly Hunter, who after several months' worth of grieving has fallen in love with Johnson. As countries around the globe prepare to surrender the necessary number of citizens, the United States prepares to deal with the situation by starting a lottery system. Those unfortunate enough to be selected will be immediately liquidized and surrendered to the alien overlords -- at least that was the way it was supposed to go. When scientist Steven Chase learns that his daughter has been singled out for oblation, he chooses not to offer up his only child but to fight back instead.
