Authors Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins have written a series of novels based upon the premise of how the Rapture would affect ordinary people in the modern world, and Left Behind is the first feature film to be adapted from their work. Rayford Steele (Brad Johnson) is an airline pilot whose relationship with his wife has gone sour; she responds by devoting more of her time and energy to the church, while he ponders having an affair with an attractive flight attendant, Hattie Durham (Chelsea Noble). In the midst of a flight to London, a number of their passengers mysteriously disappear, and chaos takes hold as a number of vehicles on the ground and in the air are suddenly unmanned. Meanwhile, Buck Williams (Kirk Cameron), a television journalist, is pondering the rash of sudden disappearances as he works on a report about Dr. Chaim Rosenzweig (Colin Fox), an Israeli scientist who has devised a formula that would make any soil on earth easy to cultivate. However, Cameron wonders if there's more to Rosenzweig than he first imagined when he discovers the doctor is in cahoots with two multi-millionaires who plan to broker the invention to promote their own agenda of international domination. The will-o'-the-wisp black sheep of a North Carolina farming family, Frannie Vaughan (Farrah Fawcett) reacts to the news that her mother has only six months to live in her usual quirky fashion -- she dashes off to parts unknown, intending to return home in exactly six months so that she may be at her mother's bedside "when the time comes." Imagine her embarrassment when, upon coming back to the farm, Frannie learns that her mother's demise occurred three days before schedule,in fact, she is even late for the funeral. When she finds out her embittered sister, Natalie (Ashley Crow), intends to sell the farm, Frannie tries to make up for past misdeeds by earning enough money (200,000 dollars to be exact) to keep the property in the family. That is why the heroine ends up packing underwear in the local silk mill owned by a handsome and unattached chap named Ruben (Brad Johnson). The real-life story of Teddy Roosevelt's role in the Spanish-American war is re-told in this made-for-television movie. Tom Berenger stars as Roosevelt, who in 1898 formed his own volunteer calvary to go into Cuba and fight the expansion of Spanish rule. Thousands of men from all walks of life volunteered, but Roosevelt honed the team down to over 500 fighting men. When they finally arrived in Cuba, they faced a well-equipped Spanish army and squared off in the famous Battle of San Juan Hill. Berenger is strong as the charismatic leader, and the supporting cast shines with familiar names. Directed by Jack Bender, Lone Justice 2 centers around the jailed Ned Blessing (Brad Johnson) as he reminisces about his hometown and the skirmishes he had gotten into with the rougher crowd. Ned gets a nasty shock upon his release--not only has the town he remembered so fondly been run down by bandits and racism towards the many black settlers, but his father is missing. Almost immediately, Ned finds himself in a fight with Verlon Borges (Bill McKinney), who, along with his sons, resides over the townspeople with an iron fist. Swearing to end the terror campaign, Ned teams up with a sweet prostitute (Brenda Bake) and hopes for the best. Lone Justice 2 originally aired on CBS. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

Produced for cable TV, this feeble follow-up to the classic Hitchcock thriller transfers the avian carnage from Bodega Bay to the New England fishing town of Land's End, where a young couple and their two daughters are besieged by squadrons of malicious gulls and their assorted winged cousins. Despite some opening scenes suggesting an actual motivation for the bird attacks -- something Hitchcock left eerily ambiguous -- there is little variation on the formula, which overstays its welcome long before the lackluster climax (which owes more to The Killer Shrews than to The Birds); the pointless proceedings are further bogged down by a dreary adultery subplot. Even the presence of Tippi Hedren fails to provide even a slightly clever nod to the original, as she is wasted in a minor role as the proprietor of a local diner who has her own theories about the cause of the bird attacks. Direction was credited to standard DGA pseudonym Alan Smithee when Rick Rosenthal withdrew his name from the final cut. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide
