Not so far back, an iconoclastic geologist began theorizing - in the face of hundreds of skeptics - that two million years ago, a titanic flood carved out the majority of present day Montana, Washington, Oregon and Idaho. His contemporaries turned their noses up and scoffed - until evidence surfaced to corroborate the scientist's theory: traces of an ancient ice dam alongside a Montana valley, which held in millions of gallons of water, until the dam itself melted - sending untold torrents across the Pacific Northwest and decimating everything in its path. In NOVA: Mystery of The Megaflood, the acclaimed and multi-award winning WGBH series NOVA uses computer generated graphics to carry viewers into this ancient realm and study the enigmatic natural catastrophe that defined and sculpted broad vistas of our country. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
Based on the 1999 bestseller by K.C. McKinnon, this touching Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation stars Alicia Silverstone as Dee Dee, a single mom and professional candlemaker who returns to her Maine hometown after a lengthy absence. Having left town with a somewhat sullied reputation, she returns with apparently the best of intentions--bringing her 12-year-old son Trooper (Matthew Knight) along for the sentimental journey. Dee Dee's reappearance is initially met with hostility by veterinarian Lydia, whose husband (and coworker) Sam had once been Dee Dee's sweetheart. Ultimately, however, Lydia warms up to both her "rival" and her son--just before Dee Dee poignantly reveals the real reason for her unexpected homecoming. NOVA reconstructs and dissects a decades-old unsolved mystery in this 60-minute special from 2005. Proclaimed for years as the apotheosis of evolutionary theory and the final proof of a link between homo sapiens and primates, the "Piltdown Man" -- a series of bones excavated from Piltdown, England in 1913 -- was proven a hoax in 1953. But who could have perpetuated such a fraud? For years, researchers and historians have guessed about the red-handed party -- popular suspects including Sherlock Holmes godfather Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Martin Hinton of the Natural History Museum, and archaeologist Charles Dawson, each of whom is examined, in turn, by this film. In NOVA: The Boldest Hoax, we revisit Piltdown, review the available evidence, listen to interviews with authorities, and are asked to draw our own conclusions about the identity of the perpetrator. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

It was undoubtedly the most ingenious and brilliant act of self-liberation in contemporary history, rivaling anything undertaken by Henri Charrière or Harry Houdini and making any fictional prison escape accounts look broadly drawn and crude by comparison. It was an undertaking of humanistic triumph so astonishing that it might have risked denial in later years were it not for the wealth of overwhelming evidence and the testimonies of survivors. In the early '40s, over 600 members of the Nazi prison camp Stalag Luft III set about digging three carefully-concealed tunnels, over three stories underground and several miles long, nicknamed "Tom," "Dick," and "Harry" -- escape routes sophisticated enough to even incorporate railways and electric lights. On the evening of March 24, 1944, the inmates planned to spring two hundred men in this way. Only 77 entered one of the tunnels -- many of whom were recaptured and killed -- but a few emerged from their incarceration unscathed. Over 60 years later, historians have devoted a wealth of literature to this miraculous occurrence, and Hollywood cinematized the subterfuge in 1963 with The Great Escape, but in this astonishing 60-minute video, WGBH's NOVA series digs into an area that has eluded researchers for decades -- locating the third tunnel -- "Harry" -- which eluded the Nazis by virtue of its careful concealment. In NOVA: The Great Escape -- The Most Daring Allied Prison Escape of World War II, viewers can journey back to the site of Stalag Luft III with NOVA's camera crew and a team of archaeologists to uncover and tour this long-lost relic and listen to the miraculous accounts of surviving prisoners and escapees. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Upon his release, however, Dalton breaks off with Gwen in favor of a sweetheart closer to his own age, college student Tamara (Kandyse McClure). In 1988, Marlene Moore, the first woman to be designated a "dangerous offender" by Canada's legal system -- even though she had never committed a serious crime -- killed herself in a Kingston, Ontario federal woman's prison. The Canadian TV movie seeks to explain the circumstances that brought the unfortunate Moore to this tragic turn of events. As played by Brooke Johnson, Marlene is shown to be an awkward, withdrawn young girl, cruelly maligned and sexually abused by family and peers alike, and never afforded the moral support or mental-health treatment she deserved. Under these circumstances, Marlene's subsequent self-destructive, sociopathic behavior seems almost predestined, and her many years behind bars for various minor crimes a logical extension of her miserable upbringing. The climactic efforts by her dedicated lawyer to prevent Marlene from being entombed in prison for an indefinite term are heartrending, and Moore manages to evoke audience sympathy almost in spite of herself by the final fade-out. The film earned two Gemini Awards (the Canadian equivalent of the Emmies) for both Brooke Johnsonand supporting actress Jayne Eastwood (as Marlene's mother). Originally telecast by the CBC, Dangerous Offender was first seen in America via the Lifetime network on November 7, 1996. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This made-for-TV movie was first seen in the United States on February 2, 1992. Simon Reynolds plays Bruce Curtis, teenaged product of a troubled Canadian home. When Bruce's parents turn up murdered, the evidence trail leads to the boy's closest friend, Scott Franz (Jaimz Woolvett). The question: did Scott act alone, or did Bruce participate? Question two: was this an "In Cold Blood" or Leopold/Loeb situation, wherein two seriously disturbed young men teamed up to become one unstoppable killing machine? Kenneth Welsh costars as the boys' defense attorney. Based on an explosive real-life case, Deadly Betrayal was originally produced for Canadian television, where it ran under the title Journey Into Darkness: The Bruce Curtis Story. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
1990's Little Kidnappers was a remake of the 1954 British film of the same name. Two Canadian orphans (Leo Wheatley and Charles Miller) are starved for affection. Their cantankerous, self-absorbed grandfather (Charlton Heston) pays very little attention to them. The boys "borrow" a baby so they can raise it as their very own, while the real parents--and the police--scour the countryside in search of the missing infant. This location-filmed version of The Little Kidnappers premiered over the Disney cable channel on August 17, 1990. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
This semisweet backwards glance at 1960s impulsiveness stars Margaret Langrick as a Canadian college freshman. She undergoes a bit of a culture shock when her white-bread values are challenged by her new hippie friend Liisa Repo-Martell. With a trio of her new and old chums, Langrick heads to Portland to attend a wedding. Once they arrive at the ceremony, the girls wreak a little bit of sexual havoc amongst the male guests before deciding to journey on to California. Thus a pattern is set for the previously shy and sheltered Langrick of letting her heart rule her head-a pattern ending up as far afield as Europe! American Boyfriends was the sequel to the equally fey, funny and freewheeling My American Cousin (1985). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This is a tepid film aimed at youngsters and focusing on the warped Martin Steckert (Richard Harris), an escaped convict, and little Martin (Justin Henry), the boy he takes hostage. Steckert uses a ruse to escape from prison when his parole is denied, and once safely on the outside, he kidnaps Martin and heads for an isolated spot along a lake that he himself visited as a little boy. Aside from the developing relationship between the two Martins, not expressed in any great depth, there is the inexplicably fired-up pursuit of Martin by Lt. Lardner (James Coburn) and the psychobabble of Dr. Mennen (Lindsay Wagner), in pursuit of Martin's motivating demons. Martin's encounter with ex-lover Karen (Karen Black) does not reveal very much, and in the end, viewers may be left wondering about everyone's motivation. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

William Fruet directed this tense Canadian rape-revenge thriller which attempted to capitalize on the success of Wes Craven's Last House on the Left (1972). The film concerns a vacationing couple, Harry and Diane (Chuck Shamata and Brenda Vaccaro), who are terrorized in a remote house on a picturesque lake. Don Stroud leads the quartet of vicious psychos who break in and attack the pair, and when Harry is revealed to be a bit of a wimp, Diane takes matters of revenge into her own hands. Vaccaro and Stroud give much better performances than the material requires, and although Fruet's film is hardly as excoriating as its predecessor, it is altogether more polished. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

- Brenda Vaccaro, Don Stroud, (more)
