You guessed it: Girls Riot is yet another "babes behind bars" affair. The principal villainess is the head guard at a girl's reformatory. She derives so much pleasure out of sadistically abusing her charges that one feels a little sorry for her when the titular riot ensues. The female inmates--not a flat-chested one in the carload--exact a hideous revenge on their tormentor. Featured in Girls Riot are such Oscar-calibre favorites as Angelica Domrose, Jocelyne Boisseu, and Cornelia Calwer. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Susanne (Angelika Domroese) has her hands full with a mother who does not leave her in peace, a daughter who ignores her, an unsatisfactory lover, and a few women friends who are not doing much better than she is. Into this vale of emotional ennui enters an attractive young man -- suggesting that life might become more interesting at last. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Alexander is a young boy at the crossroads of manhood, faced with a single mother whose time is taken up finishing her degree, studying, and pursuing her own relationships. The boy has no one to turn to for life's more important questions. He puts an ad in the paper asking for someone to be his friend and "stand by him," an ad that does not do much to improve his situation with his mother. Eventually, he comes across a young girl about his age, and between the two of them, they tackle a few of the mysteries about growing up - not the least of which involve questions on sex and relationships, a theme that recurs throughout this story. Meanwhile, Alexander's mother needs to come to grips with what it means to be a real parent. This film, like the protagonists, seems to be caught between adulthood and childhood, with a foot in both camps, not standing solidly in either. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

A sentimental favorite of East German cinema, The Legend of Paul and Paula is a moving and realistic portrait of a couple's struggle to find satisfaction and love in their everyday lives. Paula, a single mother, works long hours at a supermarket and is generally dissatisfied with her life. Approached by an older tire salesman, Herr Saft, she gravitates toward him but their relationship lacks the overriding passion she desires. Paula drifts into a bar one night and meets a most unlikely match, Paul, a respectable but slightly dull, married man. After they fall in love to a wonderful soundtrack of '70s German pop music, Paul must choose between his terminally annoying wife and Paula. Unable to break with his past, Paul wavers and Paula withdraws, seriously hurt. The ending is a classic example of "You don't know what you have until it's gone." ~ Brian Whitener, All Movie Guide

A doctor from Prague is kidnapped during the Nuremburg trials and is taken to a remote mansion in Germany. The physician is brainwashed at the heavily guarded estate into thinking he is Hitler's doctor. Hitler's mistress and a former SS agent vie for control of the mind of Hitler, still alive at the estate. The mistress wishes Hitler to resume his quest for maniacal world domination, but the SS man would have the insane dictator suffer debilitating nightmares and a tortured psyche. The two try to convince the doctor to help them with their separate interests over the aging and seemingly senile Hitler in this gripping moral and political exposé of frightening fantasy. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide
