Volatile, home-grown Mexican director and actor Emilio "El Indio" Fernández guides this simple melodrama through its paces to put across a relatively effective -- though idealistic -- story about social change. Set in a backwater village, the tale begins when an architect arrives in town, sent by the government. It turns out that the local schoolteacher is fed up with holding classes in a ramshackle lean-to that barely keeps a roof over the students' heads. The architect's job is to make sure a decent school is built. But on the opposite side of the fence is a local landowner who is against the project. Battle lines are drawn, and the conflict over the school starts to galvanize the villagers. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This effective drama about vengeance and its results is loosely based on practices in the Mexican boondocks where the law can be ignored when it comes to seeking revenge. The tale concerns two brothers who decide to avenge their father's death, as would be expected. But this ill-considered decision leads to a set of problems that continue to spiral downward until both brothers are in way above their heads. The difficulty with vengeance, they discover, is that it never ends. Popular cinematic stars Julio Aleman and Antonio Aguilar star, along with the well-known Emilio "El Indio" Fernández. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Although the definition of risqué in Mexico is far below French standards, after all, "risqué" is a universally recognized French term, this musical-sexual-religious drama is considered to be in that category by Mexican standards. The story centers on the titillating exploits of a beautiful, seductive, "she-devil" (Luz María Aguilar) who is evil enough to ruin those who get involved with her. But all is not totally lost. By the end of the film when she has wreaked enough destruction, she is transformed by a sacred image in a church and conversion is imminent. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Emilio Fernandez, the politically volatile "bad boy" of Mexican filmmakers, served as director of Pueblerina (Town Tale). The hero, played by Roberto Canedo, is framed for murder and sentenced to a dozen years in jail (Fernandez himself escaped from a 20-year sentence for revolutionary activities in 1923). He returns to his hometown, symbolically located in the shadow of twin volcanic mountains Popocateptl and Iztacchuatal, only to find that he is still considered a pariah. The ex-convict himself exacerbates the already tense situation by falling in love with the girlfriend (Columba Dominguez) of the town political boss (Luis Aceves Castaneda). The melodramatic consequences share screen time with "local color" vignettes involving horse races and cockfights. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Filmed in 1947, Emilio Fernandez' Hidden River (originally Rio Escondido) was distributed in the U.S. three years later. The matchless Maria Felix stars as Rosaura, an idealistic Mexican schoolteacher who does her best to educate the illiterate Indians in her native land. Rosaura is opposed by several authority figures who have no intention of losing their hold over the Indians, but she finds support in the form of a kindly priest. Director Fernandez' understanding of and sensitivity towards Mexico's teeming millions of unfortunates enables Hidden River to rise above its occasional cliches and unsubtleties. The cinematography is by Gabriel Figueroa, who like Emilio Fernandez and Maria Felix is a legendary figure in the Mexican cinema. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
