When Rocky (Noah Beery Jr.) wins a free trip to Hawaii, Jim (James Garner) tags along, only to cross the path of his former Army commander John "Howling Mad" Smith (Ken Swofford). Before Jim quite knows what has happened, Smith has gotten him involved in a CIA operation designed to break up a spy ring. Unfortunately, old "Howling Mad" has neglected to inform Jim of all the dangers inherent in this assignment, and as a result our hero is beaten, robbed, drugged and kidnapped--and that's all during the first half hour. Fortunately, through the sort of incredible coincidence that could only happen on network television, Jim's policeman pal Dennis Becker (Joe Santos) shows up in Hawaii just in time to lend a helping hand. Jim (James Garner) picks up his phone and hears a threat against his life: the caller, it turns out, has dialed the wrong number. The intended recipient of the threat is self-absorbed social climber Jay Rockfelt (John Pleshette), who in his eagerness to make an impression on the world has inadvertently insulted--and publicly humiliated--a notorious gangster. Though he has no vested interest in Jay's plight, Jim nonetheless tries to orchestrate a rescue when the bad guys (so bad that they even poison a harmless little dog!) kidnap Jay's sister. In the first half of a two-part story (originally telecast as a single two-hour "TV movie"), Jim (James Garner) tries to save Dr. Megan Dougherty (Kathryn Harrold), a blind psychologist, from a mysterious stalker. There's a strong possibility that Megan's tormentor is one of her own patients, but she refuses to violate the patient-doctor confidentiality by providing Jim with any vital information. Thus, the detective is forced to piece the clues together himself and without his client's knowledge. Police detective Dennis Becker (Joe Santos) is suspended after being framed on a heroin-possession charge. Since the drugs in question had been confiscated by the police, it would seem that somewhere in the Department is lurking a "dirty" cop determined to destroy Dennis. In his efforts to prove his friend's innocence, Jim (James Garner) matches wits with a third-rate nightclub comic (Jack Carter) who is acting as go-between for a notorious drug dealer. This is the first of two Rockford Files episodes in which James Garner is reunited with his former Maverick costar Jack Kelly, here cast as the villain of the piece. Also making guest appearances are future Hill Street Blues regular James B. On behalf of Vietnamese refugee Mai (Irene Yah-Ling Sun), Jim (James Garner) searches for the girl's brother Vinh (Jim Ishida), who myseriously vanished after leaving a relocation center. It turns out that Vinh has been waylaid by a couple of war veterans (from the "Catering Corps") who want the missing Vihn to lead them to the $500,000 they'd stolen just before the fall of Saigon. Complicating matters is the fact that Mai seems utterly incapable of telling Jim the whole truth. Counterpointing this intrigue is a running gag involving Jim's dad Rocky (Noah Beery Jr.) and his buddy L.J. (Al Stevenson). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

It all begins when an undercover Fed mistakes Jim for a police officer, an error which briefly affords Lt. Chapman (James Luisi) the opportunity to put Jim behind bars for keeps. Outwardly a dimwitted rube, Aaron has nonetheless become a multimillionaire by promoting his own "School of Success" self-help system. Much to Jim's surprise, Aaron is willing to sign his lucrative business over to him--lock, stock and barrel. But this is no act of generosity: Mr. Ironwood is on the lam from mobsters who are willing to go to any extreme (and we all know what that means!) to control his operation. But evil land baron Bryson (Robert Culp) wants all the land for himself and he holds Henrietta's mortgage. In this rare 90-minute episode of The Rockford Files, Jim (James Garner) is hired by wealthy Warren Jameson, who wants to know something of the background of his future son-in-law Mark Chalmers (Geoffrey Land). Before long, Jim has run afoul of police lieutenant Larry Pierson (Eddie Fontaine), who indicates that any digging into Chalmers' past might prove hazardous to one's health. Before he knows what's happening, Jim is beaten, kidnapped (twice!) and subject to harrassment from the Feds--and he still has no idea why. Producer Roy Huggins and director Douglas Heyes, Maverick veterans both, reteamed for the made-for-TV Drive Hard, Drive Fast. Brian Kelly stars as a race car driver who would have been better off sticking to the track. Upon hopping out of his slicked-up auto, Kelly gets mixed up in an unsavory love triangle involving Joan Collins and Joseph Campanella. Before long, Kelly has to keep peeking over his shoulder to avoid being hacked to piece by a machete-wielding assailant. In 1950, Maj. Jefferson Pike (James Garner), an Army intelligence agent who served with distinction in World War II, awakens in a hospital with severe amnesia. He isn't sure where he is, how he got there, or even who the woman at his side is, even though the doctor tells him that her name is Anna (Eva Marie Saint) and that she is his wife. The doctor instructs Pike to recall, in as much detail as possible, what he was doing before the accident that caused his traumatic memory loss. But the doctor isn't a doctor, Anna isn't Pike's wife, it isn't 1950, and he isn't in an American hospital. World War II is still very much in progress, and Pike is being duped in an elaborate scheme prepared by Maj. Walter Gerber (Rod Taylor), a German intelligence agent. Gerber is trying to trick a drugged and suggestible Pike into telling him everything he knows, as the injured soldier lies in a Bavarian military hospital after being taken prisoner. Will Pike be able to see through the cracks in Gerber's facade before he spills the beans that could mean death and defeat for American soldiers? 36 Hours was later remade for TV under the title Breaking Point. TV fans will want to keep an eye peeled for bit parts by James Doohan from Star Trek and John Banner from Hogan's Heroes. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

In this reworking of the earlier episode "The Jeweled Gun", attractive widow Margaret Ross (Catherine McLeod) asks Bret (James Garner) to provide protection while she heads to a Montana bank, there to deposit a large sum of money. Margaret claims to be worried that the men who killed her husband will try to steal the cash. In the course of the journey, Bret discovers that Margaret's money is counterfeit and her story is probably bogus--a disturbing realization, especially since he has fallen in love with her. Featured in the cast is Luis Delgado, the brother-in-law of Maverick producer-creator Roy Huggins and a semi-regular as Officer Billings on James Garner's later TV series The Rockford Files. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This 79-minute documentary, per its title, is a nonstop display of the best flamenco dancers in Spain. Among the flamenco kings and queen spotlighted herein are Pilar Lopez, Antonio, Maria Luz, Pacita Tomas and Roberto Ximenez. Also on hand (and on their toes) are the Ballet Espagnol and bullfighter Juan Belmonte. To non-fans, the film may seem too much of a good thing; perhaps it would have worked better as a short subject. The English-language version was subtitled by NY Herald Tribune dance-critic Walter Terry.
