A waiter discovers that good taste can be dangerous in this offbeat psychological drama from France. Nicolas (Jean-Pierre Lorit) is a young man living in bohemian poverty in Lyon, sharing a flat with his girlfriend Beatrice (Florence Thomassin) and three of their friends. Nicolas works part-time as a server, and one night a customer asks him to taste his hors d'oeuvres and see if he can identity the ingredients. Nicolas' palate meets the challenge, and the customer introduces himself as Frederic Delamont (Bernard Giraudeau), a wealthy business tycoon. Frederic hires Nicolas as his official food taster at a handsome salary. Frederic also discovers that Nicolas wears the same size shoes and suits, and he begins costuming Nicolas in his cast-offs. While Beatrice isn't comfortable with their newly luxurious lifestyle, Nicolas takes to it readily, until he becomes seriously ill after eating chemically-tainted seafood. It seems that Frederic loathes seafood, and wanted to condition Nicolas to hate it too -- this was to be the first step toward turning Nicolas into someone who could duplicate Frederic's likes and dislikes on all levels. Une Affaire De Gout was based on a novel by Philippe Balland. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Benjamin Ballon wants to be a filmmaker, and has devoted a large part of his life for the past few years to getting to the point of filming an independent movie. He has been encouraged by Carmen Maura (playing herself), an established star, who has agreed to appear in his first film, and it is her level-headedness, calmness, and general good sense that keeps the project moving along, despite Benjamin's inexperience and a very temperamental male lead. On one occasion when the male lead is hours late for a shoot, her calm is the only thing which keeps the crew from walking out. The title comes from Maura's habit of bringing homemade tortillas to meetings, and using them to get her way. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This remake of Luis Bunuel's El (1952), which in turn was based on Mercedes Pinto's book, puts a new spin on the tale by making the protagonist a mad woman married to an equally insane man. The original story focused mainly on the husband's jealousy of his unusually beautiful "trophy wife." The wife is Delia, who spends most of her time living alone in the midst of her husband's vast mansion which is filled with fantastic sculptures and rare architecture. Her husband values her more as a piece of living art than a real person and jealously guards her thusly. He is convinced that she is always philandering or thinking about it. Delia does not know what to do. He has crushed her spirit and she fears his mental instability and bears his insistence that they make love in the moonlight beside the pool with quiet dignity. Inside, she worries about their son. Her inability to interact with others and to escape the situation begins taking its toll and eventually, she too begins to lose her tenuous grip on sanity. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Jules is a refreshingly level-headed fifteen-year old who lives with his grandparents in the country because his parents have careers that require them to travel a great deal. He enjoys fishing with his grandfather, and the local kids are just fine with him. Whenever his mother appears on the scene, he is especially happy, but the same can't be said when his business-obsessed father shows up. When his grandparents can no longer afford their country life, they move to a small town nearby, and Jules goes with them. On the whole, he manages pretty well, though the new kids are not a particularly nice bunch. He is particularly fortunate in being initiated into sex with the help of an attractive gal by the name of Sophie. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

The legend of Alban, the rebel who fought French colonialists before the beginning of the independence movement in the Antilles, is the basis for this film that focuses on the years between 1943-1947 on Martinique. Alban was a black overseer on a French plantation when one day he saw his wife leaving the barn after the plantation owner had forced her to give in to his sexual demands. Furious, Alban shoots his wife and batters the owner, and then flees for his life to the surrounding hills where he successfully eludes the inept gendarmes. He comes to be a symbol of civil disobedience and is helped by the townspeople as he commits various acts of sabotage, including stealing guns from the plantation owner. Many years go by and people wonder how long Alban can hold out. As the film draws to a close, the Flamboyant Tree of the title comes to center stage - when the tree is cut, it does not die, an arboreal symbol of the immortality that pervades the legend of Alban. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
