A woman must choose between the ethereal love of her ghostly seducer or a life with her uncaring husband in director Amol Palekar's supernatural romance. Beautiful Lachchi (Rani Mukherji) is engaged to a miserly man whose every move is driven by his insatiable love of money. When Lachchi's husband departs for a five year business trip on the night of their wedding, her supernatural admirer takes on his appearance and thus begins an elaborate ruse. This Indian drama is set within a tiny village in the Haharashtra desert during the 1940s and chronicles the experiences of the rookie schoolteacher who has been sent there to educate the shepherds' children. Unfortunately, the simple sheepherders are suspicious of teachers, and he is anything but welcome. Fortunately, one old man and his granddaughter take him in. Now he must somehow convince the reluctant children to come to school. This is difficult, as their parents need the youngsters to oversee the flocks. To make it worse, the villagers have the teacher run a string of sometimes embarrassing errands for them. Somehow the poor fellow's teaching experience is nothing like he had hoped it would be. The plot is based on a 1953 novel by Vyankatesh Madgulkar; he also wrote the screenplay. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

It's difficult to tell the girls from the boys in this off-beat, melodramatic East Indian love story. The story centers on a classically trained actor who has spent his entire life performing onstage as a woman, something that has carried over into his personal life. He is on the road one day when he meets a frightened young woman who was kidnapped just before her wedding day and sent off to become a prostitute. She fought her captors and escaped, but then suffered at the hands of three brutes on a beach. The drag queen offers to return her to her home, but only if she will disguise herself as a man. Thus an odd-couple is formed. As they make the long journey back to her village and endure a few adventures, the two find themselves falling in love. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
