Add Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag to QueueAdd Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag to top of Queue
The excitement and danger that is part of an air-force pilot's training dominates this visually exciting documentary, shot and initially exhibited in the large-format IMAX film format. Inspired by the exploits of the pilot's grandfather, a Marine flyer who served in World War II, Fighter Pilot: Operation Red is the story of John C. Stratton, a captain in the United States Air Force who is eager to become a fighter pilot. With this goal in mind, Stratton's superiors assign him to Red Flag, an intensive training program at Nevada's Nellis Air Force Base. Red Flag puts young pilots through a rigorous series of flight exercises which closely simulate airborne combat conditions, and this documentary puts the viewer beside Stratton in the cockpit as he faces off against as many as 100 other jets flying in close pattern exercises. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Add Volcanoes of the Deep Sea to QueueAdd Volcanoes of the Deep Sea to top of Queue
Canadian documentary filmmaker Stephen Low directs the IMAX movie Volcanoes of the Deep Sea, with Titanic director James Cameron as the executive producer. During its brief 40-minute running time, the film starts out with a 1977 expedition to find life at the bottom of the sea. At depths as low as 10,000 feet, the discovery proved the existence of underwater volcanoes and the plant life they help sustain. Using the deep-sea diving vehicle known as Alvin, the filmmakers capture large-format film footage of some of these underwater ecosystems along with some helpful CGI reconstructions. Ed Harris delivers the narration. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

Anne Bancroft narrates this 52-minute documentary, a 3-D Imax view of 19th-century America as seen from the viewpoint of author Mark Twain. Writer/director Stephen Low combined black-and-white photographs of the humorist, historic 19th century stereo photographs, and contemporary color footage of Twain's Hannibal, MO, hometown (including the annual Hannibal frog-jumping contest and parade). The chronological coverage of Twain's life and career is intercut with regional square dancing, reenactments of Civil War battles, and modern-day Mississippi River steamboats. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

This is the second dramatic feature to be made in Imax 3-D. The plotline, of a Russian immigrant boy who has come to New York to search for his long missing relatives only provides a thin excuse to offer an unparalleled, spectacular show case of the Big Apple, past and present. The past images were created from an enormous assortment of old stereoscopic photographs that offer the audience a rare glimpse of the city's early history and the fascinating lives of those who lived there. The present images are presented from a wide variety of viewpoints as Thomas, the 11-year-old protagonist, rides the roller coasters of Coney Island, experiences his first subway ride, and imagines that he is a bird over Manhattan. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
