Italian filmmaker Salvatore Piscicelli writes and directs the psychological drama Alla Fine Della Notte (At the End of the Night). Depressed, middle-aged actor/director Bruno Spada (Ennio Fantastichini) goes on a journey in search of happiness. At his home in Rome, his own wronged wife Fiamma (Stefania Orsola Garello) rightfully wants to leave him due to his constant infidelity. He first goes to Tuscany in order to visit his ex-girlfriend Viola (Elena Sofia Ricci), but she has her own relationship problems with a Filippino man (Ricky Tognazzi) to deal with. In Naples, he reunites with his aunt (Ida Di Benedetto) and recollects his childhood memories. Directed by Giuseppe Ferrara, the political thriller I Banchieri Di Dio (God's Bankers) is based on the true-crime saga of the corrupted Banco Ambrosiano and the unsolved murder of bank president Roberto Calvi in 1982. Co-written by Ferrara and Armenia Balducci, the complex story involves the discovery of a trillion lire deficiet in the bank accounts. Calvi (Omero Antonutti) is blamed and thrown in prison. With the help of his wife (Pamela Villoresi), Calvi goes between the corrupt system of political and religious leaders who can get him out of jail. In this Italian crime drama, unemployed Angelo (Marco Leonardi) is elated to receive an offer from Luciano (Alessandro Zamattio) to assist in a Bangkok video shoot. Unknown to Angelo, Luciano stashes inside the camera $10,000 worth of heroin, discovered at airport customs. Placed in a cell with rats, Angelo gets a shady lawyer, Ortega (Giancarlo Giannini), and a 32-year sentence at a prison run by sadistic supervisors. A visit from an Italian Embassy representative (Mirca Viola, a former Miss Italy) brings zero results, so he becomes part of an escape planned by prisoner Belisario (F. Murray Abraham), who wants revenge on Ortega. When the wife of a former political radical dies after surgery, the man goes over the edge and decides to make society pay for her passing in this Italian crime melodrama. The unhinged widower Amos leaves his job as a watchmaker and begins plotting to punish another ex-radical who sold out and became a government official. Amos enlists the aid of his young apprentice and two other old radicals and together they kidnap the minister and kill his bodyguard. They then hide out in an abandoned seaside mansion. Amos sends David, his assistant, back to the minister's residence to keep watch upon his beautiful daughter Chiara, a student of anatomy, who spends her time dissecting corpses. The title of this movie raises an issue that is never really met head-on in the story, instead, the focus seems to be on a meandering sub-plot. The Pope (Terence Stamp) was once Father Andreani, a teacher of Father Bruno Martello (Fabrizio Bentivoglio) when Father Bruno was studying at the Catholic University. As Father Andreani rises up the hierarchy until the cardinals choose him from among their ranks to be the Supreme Pontiff, Father Bruno errs by breaking his celibacy vows with a gorgeous terrorist and heads in the opposite direction -- actually, to India where he is given a magical mixture that induces a transcendental state, and apparently changes his politics as well. Once back in Italy, he is convinced by opposition bishops to murder the Pope -- but the ex-Father Bruno has his own devious plot in mind. Little does the Pope know what is in store for him, as the altered-consciousness of his old student fixates on a little bit of the mind-bending mixture that he has reserved for very special occasions. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Giulio Berruti's unusual cult horror film casts former sex symbol Anita Ekberg as Sister Gertrude, a nun working in a mental institution. Gertrude is clearly insane, and takes a great deal of morphine for her self-diagnosed cancer. She goes to town and picks up men, seduces a younger nun (Paola Morra) who was abused by her grandfather, and supposedly murders patients until the Mother Superior (Alida Valli) has her poisoned. Luigi Casellato appears as a crippled painter who gets kicked to death, and genre favorite Joe Dallesandro leads the supporting cast as a handsome doctor. Antonio Maccoppi's skillful cinematography gives the film a harsh, intimidating look and Ekberg creates a sympathetic character, although certain scenes -- such as her stepping on a patient's dentures -- cross the line into unintentional humor. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

A mother discovers a horrifying secret about her young son's imaginary friend in this gothic shocker based on Henry James' The Turn of the Screw and directed by the late Marcello Aliprandi. Twelve-year-old Martino may as well live alone at his family's sprawling Venetian villa. Largely ignored by his wealthy, self-absorbed parents and left with few playmates with whom to pass the day, Martino soon falls under the spell of an imaginary friend named Luca. When Martino's mother begins to investigate her son's increasingly hostile invisible playmate, a revelation about her past leads her to believe that Luca may in fact be the vengeful spirit of the child she lost before Martino was born. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
