Much against his will, Monk (Tony Shalhoub) checks into a hospital to be treated for a bloody nose. His mortal fear of being left alone in a hospital room is only exacerbated when Monk stumbles upon the body of a doctor who has been bludgeoned to death by an oxygen tank. The weapon belongs to an elderly patient who couldn't possibly have arisen from his sickbed to commit the crime, but he's the only suspect the police have. In his efforts to solve the murder, Monk not only learns the true significance of the old adage "physician heal thyself", but also ends up at the mercy of a killer who is fully prepared to "medicate" our hero into the next world. This is the final episode of Monk's fifth season. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
In this documentary that focuses on the private life of a very public media figure, filmmakers Michael Cain and Matt Radeki wade through more than 3,000 of former Inside Edition correspondent Rick Kirkham's personal video footage to tell the harrowing tale of a life spiraling out of control. Ever since receiving his very first video camera at the age of fourteen, Kirkham has used the lens as everything from a private confessional to a personal confidant, obsessively capturing every emotion and constantly laying his soul bare as the tape rolled. From his early break as an American Bandstand dancer to turn as a local TV news reporter and eventual rise to national correspondent for Inside Edition, Kirkham always had a fresh tape and something to say. As Kirkham and his girlfriend discover that she has become pregnant and quickly begin making marriage plans, the troubled persona that emerges in front of his own camera lens stands in stark contrast to the carefree public face put forward for the Inside Edition broadcasts. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) tells Audrey (Kim Raver) that Paul (James Frain) was shot while saving his life. Paul is flown in to CTU, where surgeons try to save him. Audrey seems to be rediscovering her feelings for her husband. Heller (William Devane) tells Keeler (Geoff Pierson) that Marwan (Arnold Vosloo) is probably going to strike again, and Keeler suggests they make provisions for civil unrest. CTU finds the name of Joseph Fayed (Adam Alexi-Malle) on the document retrieved from McLennan-Forster, and he's on their terrorist watch list. Jack comes up with a plot to have Dina Araz (Shohreh Aghdashloo) approach Fayed for help (even though she insists she's never met the man, because Marwan has been careful to keep his cells separated), claiming that she took Jack hostage during a firefight. Dina agrees to help when Jack promises to put her and Behrooz (Jonathan Ahdout) in witness protection together. Jack and Dina go to Fayed's home, and Dina convinces him to contact Marwan. Fayed sends his men to pick them up, but CTU's attempts to track them go awry. Anderson (Ned Vaughn), with help from a mysterious woman (Dagmara Dominczyk), abducts a pilot, and then uses him to get into a military base. Back at CTU, Sara's been ousted and Edgar (Louis Lombardi) seems despondent over his mother's death. Tony (Carlos Bernard) tells Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) that Driscoll canned Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) over her loyalty to Jack, and Michelle decides to call her back to work. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide
A violent pile-up occurs during an amateur soccer game -- and when the teams disperse, unpopular hockey player Terry Rivers (David Andriole) is found at the bottom of the pile, with his throat slashed. As Grissom (William L. Petersen), Catherine (Marg Helgenberger), and Sara (Jorja Fox) investigate Rivers' murder, Warrick (Gary Dourdan) and Nick (George Eads) try to determine if a saxophone player died of a drug overdose. Among those closest to the dead musician was casino singer Lillie Ivers (Nicole Ari Parker), in whom Warrick takes a more than professional interest. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Film director Adam Rifkin spoofs Hollywood's star machine in concocting this fictional "mockumentary" about a director (Rifkin playing himself) who wants to make a documentary film about a rising young star. Anton Markwell (Tony Markes, who co-directed the film) is the object of Rifkin's inquiring camera. Rifkin, fancying himself a star-maker, advises Markwell to change his name to Nick Decker. Decker is actually the second choice for the project. Rifkin originally selects David Lake (David Andriole), but Lake signs a film contract and his studio won't cooperate with Rifkin's documentary. Rifkin has no better luck with Decker, until his protégé lands a guest role on the popular television series Baywatch. But while filming on the set, Decker steps on a sting ray and ends up in the hospital, ending his chance for quick notoriety. Meanwhile, Lake continues to beat out Decker for plum roles. ~ Michael Betzold, All Movie Guide

Set in the year 2017, Barb Wire takes place after democracy has fallen and a fascist military junta has taken over the U.S. government, plotting to wipe out the country with Red Ribbon, a laboratory-manufactured disease derived from the AIDS virus. The entire test city of Topeka has been annihilated, and only the small bastion of Steel Harbor remains the last free zone in the country, conveniently the home of the title heroine Pamela Lee. Barb, a leather-clad, silicon-stretched motorcycle mama, happens to carry antibodies for Red Ribbon in her DNA, thus making her an enemy of the state. She sets out to defend freedom and take down the evil government by posing as a stripper and seducing foolish male adversaries with her well-displayed assets. The plot thickens as she happens upon her freedom-fighter ex-lover and his wife (much in the vein of Casablanca). ~ Jeremy Beday, All Movie Guide

In this postmodern exploitation flick loosely based on "Little Red Riding Hood," the uneducated daughter of a drug-addicted prostitute flees the foster-care system in search of her long-lost grandmother but meets up instead with a serial killer. Vanessa (Reese Witherspoon), a nearly illiterate firebug and serial shoplifter, desperately clings to normalcy even though her mother turns tricks, does drugs, and manages to ignore the fact that the girl's stepfather Michael T. Weiss has been abusing her for years. When both of her parents get arrested, Vanessa steals the car of her family-services caseworker (Conchata Ferrell) and heads up Interstate 5 in search of her paternal grandmother, who's never met her. Car problems force her to accept a ride from Bob Wolverton (Kiefer Sutherland), a youth counselor who uses charm and sympathy to get the girl to open up. Confessing the sordid details of her childhood to Bob, Vanessa is shocked when he suddenly declares that she's one of the "garbage people" and that he plans to murder her and have sex with her corpse. Bob, it turns out, is the "I-5 Murderer," who's been slaughtering young prostitutes in the Los Angeles area. Thanks to a gun borrowed from her fiancé, Vanessa manages to turn the tables on Bob, shooting him repeatedly and leaving him for dead. He survives, Vanessa is arrested, and the two meet up again in court -- with her unrepentant, even though the police disbelieve her story, him flanked by his prim wife (Brooke Shields) and the righteous indignation of the American legal system. Locked up in the juvie for psychological evaluation, Vanessa gets in touch with her wild side and eventually escapes, heading off to her fateful meeting with grandma. Although Freeway was originally filmed for HBO, vigorously positive critical response eventually earned it a theatrical release. Alanna Ubach, who portrays Vanessa's nemesis/accomplice Mesquita, would go on to appear with Witherspoon in Legally Blonde. Freeway also features two Clueless alumni: Dan Hedaya, as a police detective, and Brittany Murphy, as the disfigured lesbian who befriends Vanessa in lock-up. Michael T. Weiss, who previously appeared in gay indie Jeffrey, appears in both Freeway and its sequel, Freeway 2: Confessions of a Trickbaby. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide
