From Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar (Live Flesh, All About My Mother) comes this offbeat drama about Leo Macías (Marisa Paredes), a romance novelist who writes her trashy tomes under the pseudonym Amanda Gris. When her marriage begins to dissolve, Leo finds herself falling into despair, leading her to drink and lose her knack for writing her tawdry tales. Out of her turmoil, she writes a bleak novel that garners no attention. To make matters worse, Ángel (Juan Echanove), a newspaper editor with a romantic interest in Leo, hires her to write a scathing review of Amanda Gris, not realizing Gris is Leo's nom de plume. This off-beat interpretation of Shakespeare's similarly off-beat play is a low-budget, cinematic version of the Lindsay Kemp Company's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Not just a reproduction of Shakespeare, the players use mime, songs, and dances to make their happy way through the long night -- with a certain amount of bare skin and even ambiguous slants on gender (is Titania male or female or both?). Inventive and outrageous in parts, this unique film does quite well, especially considering that it was shot in less than two weeks. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

David (Mark Stevens) is a physician who returns to Spain 30 years after his involvement in the Spanish Civil War. Now a member of a medical convention, he looks up old friends and finds his former lover, now a married woman with a flamenco-dancing daughter. He and the daughter (Manuela Vargas) have an immediate and mutual attraction to each other.
