El Arbol De Las Cerezas (aka The Cherry Tree) is a well-crafted but unsentimental look at life through the eyes of a child in a remote Catalan village in Spain. Angel (Blai Pascual) is a young boy who lives with his sister and grandmother; his father is gone, his mother is away working with the circus, and he thinks often about the possible death of his grandmother, who he believes will go to a heaven full of the cherry trees he likes to draw. Angel's older sister Dolors (Diana Palazon) desperately wants to get out, and has had romantic connections with most of the men in town until she makes the acquaintance of the village's new doctor. And for most of the people living in the village, life is a matter of petty crimes, minor disappointments, and quiet desperation. This lively western from Spain centers on the exploits of a wealthy young troublemaker who escapes from a Franciscan monastery and teams up with a handsome country boy who has run away from the Army. Together the two try to become outlaws and pose as gang members under the notorious El Argentino, an outlaw who plies his trade upon the border of Portugal and Galicia in northern Spain. Much to their surprise, the fellow turns out to be a female reporter for the New York Times, hoping to interview El Argentino. Unfortunately, the outlaws have never met him. The second film from writer/director Whit Stillman, Barcelona is a smart, urbane comedy of manners set in Spain at the tail end of the Cold War. Taylor Nichols stars as Ted, an American salesman living in Barcelona. Out of the blue, he is visited by his acidic cousin Fred (Chris Eigeman), a U.S. Navy officer sent abroad to work damage control on rising anti-American sentiment. The textbook "Ugly American," Fred travels through the city in full military regalia, impervious to the constant taunts of "Fascist!" Like the similarly self-absorbed Ted, who has become involved with political activist Monsterrat (Tushka Bergen), Fred also finds romance, with a party girl played by Mira Sorvino. A brittle fish-out-of-water comedy, Barcelona is literate and sophisticated, a knowing essay on cultural identity and perception. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Movie Guide
