On the heels of his hit romantic comedy Pane e Tulipani, Italian writer/director Silvio Soldino tackles a more edgy tale of forbidden love in Brucio Nel Vento. Loosely based on the novel Hier by Agota Kristof, the films tells of Tobias, a refugee from Eastern Europe living a downtrodden existence in Switzerland. For ten years, Tobias has slaved in the monotony of a Swiss watch factory, trying to forget the tragedy that drove him from his homeland while searching for the perfect woman. One day she appears working at the watch factory, an immigrant just like Tobias, a woman he recognizes as his half-sister Caroline. Despite their shared bloodlines, and the fact that Caroline is married with children, Tobias sets out to win her love with all the madness of a man exorcising the demons of a secret past. ~ Connor McMadden, All Movie Guide

This Spanish-French comedy set in South London seeks to demonstrate that human relationships provide an excellent example of chaos theory. Featuring a bilingual cast, the story centers on Luis, an introverted bookworm who travels to London, accompanied by his overbearing mother, to stay with his aunt Olivia. Olivia has a tempestuous relationship with a handsome television actor, Duncan. Her child belongs to him. With all these people together under one roof, the situation in the apartment is quite chaotic. However, Luis' mother eventually goes back home and Duncan, who is caught philandering at a party, gets the boot. Soon Luis and Olivia are having a torrid affair of their own until his mother returns and causes all sorts of trouble. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

In this pleasant, largely uneventful drama, Jules' problems outside the home with girls and school work are reflected by the on-again, off-again support he receives from his mother in their perpetual conflict with his controlling father. In a humorous moment, Jules' mom has an embarrassing time shopping for condoms, which she is getting because she's thinking about having an affair. The boy stays after school quite frequently so that his instructor can collect overtime pay while practicing (with Jules) lines for a play he is hoping to appear in. Another friend of his is suing the school for educational malpractice: he can't get a job, so they must have done something wrong. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Nathalie is a lawyer, and a good one. She defends poor creeps like Nicolas (Patrick Chesnais) against the well-paid lawyers of big corporations. Curiously, she has no problem being the girlfriend of one of those well-paid lawyers. However, Nicolas is a special case: he lost everything he had either personally or professionally as a result of corporate callousness, and when he became suicidal, she invited him into her life and her bed. Once Nicolas overcomes the urge to commit suicide, he becomes consumed with the possibility of getting, if not justice, at least revenge on those who ruined him. In this comedy, he comes very near to getting his wish. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
