The veneer of a happy marriage disguises an ugly secret in this hard-hitting drama from Italy. Anita and Michele (Laura Morante and Luca Zingaretti) are celebrating the tenth anniversary of their wedding. At a dinner party in which the couple's friends and family are helping to mark this joyous occasion, Anita decides its time to get a few things off her chest. It quickly becomes clear that their marriage is not all it appears to be. The mood turns ugly and then argumentative, finally exploding with a shocking act of violence. Christian De Sica co-scripted, directed and stars in this Italian satire about lower-class revenge at a snooty Roman rowing club. Ladies man Robert (De Sica) keeps his affairs secret from his wife Livia (Cinzia Mascoli), since her wealthy father is the source of his income. Unfortunately, Dolores (Beatriz Rico) can't keep mum, creating a cash-flow problem. Bank accounts determine the pecking order at the club, and members with wimpy wallets have go through such humiliations as auctioning away their furniture. With the club prez arrested for embezzlement, a waiter scoring with a top model, and the massage therapist winning the lottery, it becomes evident that the lower-class has the last laugh, perhaps explaining the popularity of this comedy in Italy. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

In a northern Italian province, townspeople prepare for the wedding of wealthy, balding businessman Edgardo (Dario Cantarelli) and beautiful Francesca (Ines Sastre), pressured into marriage by her family. Angelo (Diego Abantantuono), who went to America when he was young, returns with a fortune. When Francesca sees him, she realizes she can't marry Edgardo. She flees the altar, is talked into returning, secretly says her vows as though marrying the stranger, and then later reveals this secret to him, saying, "You came to save me." Angelo tells her the facts behind his wealth; he was a failure in America, inheriting his fortune from his dying brother. Italian filmmaker Carlo Verdone both directed and starred in this lightweight comedy comprised of three segments, each dealing with the experiences of three grooms embarking upon disastrous honeymoons. In the first a very proper, fastidious and socially conscious doctor marries a nervous wreck of a girl who only married him because she was expected to; soon after their ceremony, he takes her to the tomb of his first wife where he proceeds to compare them. In the second, a vulgar boor and his tawdry wife embark upon their wedding night with the intent of breaking records for marathon and inventive lovemaking. In the third, an innocent, meek fellow does his best to please his bride who is disappointed by her new husband. Things go awry from the start when the cleric stretches out their ceremony to a nearly unbearable length.
