Brazilian filmmaker Aluizio Abranches, who garnered international attention with his debut feature Um Copo de Colera, directed this audacious and idiosyncratic crime thriller. When she was a young woman, Filomena Capadocio (Marieta Severo) had pledged to marry Firmino Santos Guerra (Carlos Vereza), but she opted to call off the engagement and instead wed Borges Capadscio, one of his greatest enemies. An angry Santos Guerra swore to someday take vengeance against Filomena, but waited thirty years to make good on his promise, when arranged for the cold-blooded murder of Filomena's husband and two sons. Distraught, Filomena brings together her three daughters -- Maria Pia (Luiza Mariani, Maria Rosa (Maria Luisa Mendonca) and Maria Francesca (Julia Lemmertz) - and tells them of her plan to avenge these deaths of her men. Each of the sisters is given the name of a different hired killer, and each is to arrange for the death of one of the men responsible for the slayings. Maria Pia has to free Jesuino Cruz (Wagner Moura) from jail so he can perform the hit, Maria Rosa must convince a usually honest cop (Tuca Andrada) to turn to the wrong side of the law, and Maria Francesca has the assignment of tracking down the crazed Ze des Cobras (Enrique Diaz), who likes to feast on snakes. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Um Copo de Colera, which is adapted from a novel by Raduan Nassar, is an experimental film about an odd couple. She is an attractive journalist of twenty-five and he is a recluse in his late thirties who lives in a farm house outside Sao Paulo, where he has created a world of his own. When he comes home, she is waiting for him. They go to the bedroom. There is hardly a word spoken between the two. The next morning, he remembers that ants have chewed a hole in the hedge. He is very angry and the atmosphere changes. The harmony explodes into insults and recriminations. A few hours later, the same ritual is repeated -- desire, fulfillment, humiliation. The fate of a remote Brazilian province will be determined by the passage of a reclamation bill. If the bill goes through the land will be destroyed. Fortunately, Father Stephen Lewis is working hard to stop it. For months he has led numerous high-profile protests, but then just a few days before the assembly retires to decide the bill, he simply vanishes. This off-beat political thriller chronicles the attempts of American reporter Michael Coleman to find the radical priest and interview him. Coleman, who works for a paper in Rio, is obsessed with finding Father Lewis for over the months the two have developed a tempestuous, argumentative relationship over the phone. Privately, Coleman wonders if the outspoken priest's actions mask ulterior motives. Still, he cannot help but respect the father's charisma and drive. So desperate is Coleman to find Lewis, that he stops at nothing, calling in every favor, and even resorting to dirty tricks. The Brazilian Color of Destiny stars Guilherme Fontes as a tormented Rio de Janeiro teen. Fontes' family had fled Chile's repressive Pinochet regime, but not before his older brother was tortured and killed by the Chilean police. The boy's cousin Julia Lemmetz arrives in Rio, having herself escaped Chile for political reasons. Drawn to his activist cousin, Fontes joins her at an anti-Pinochet demonstration at the Chilean embassy. The two rebels storm the embassy and dump a can of red paint in the office of one of the diplomats. With this one act of defiance, Fontes is finally able to purge the guilt he's always felt over the death of his brother. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
